Excellent cliff jump from Fisherman’s Cove!

Yesterday we received a call about a Pelican with two broken wings found in the water by the @scubastlucia team at @ansechastanet. Anse Chastanet participates i...n many charitable causes, not only do they assist with dog food/ free stays to auction, but they are also leaders in marine conservation, including turtle conservation, reef restoration, managing the lion fish population and so much more so the staff didn’t hesitate to rescue the bird out of the water after witnessing it struggle. We knew we needed to help, but we had no idea where to start. Obviously a vet was needed, but pelicans are actually a very rare sight in St Lucia, so we had no idea if any of the vets would be able. After discussing with Charlene, we ended up calling the ministry vet, Dr Kitanda to see if he would take a look. I was already Meeting him at the airport, so I asked if I could bring a pelican along. He agreed, and off I went, with a full car! Dr. Kitanda inspected the bird and allowed me to assist, explaining the extent of the injuries. After the exam, it was suspected he was hit by a boat propeller, causing both wings to break. Due to the hollow nature of bird bones, they didn’t just break, they splintered, rendering the wings unmendable. In the end, we agreed that euthanasia would be the most humane course of action. It was not the end result we were hoping for, but at least he experienced kindness at the end of his life. It got us thinking about how easily his fate could have been avoided. He was one pelican sitting on the vast ocean and a passing boat managed to hit him. Sometimes I can’t help but feel that we as humans, feel a sense of entitlement when it comes to the Earth. We take what we want, when we want, with little regard for the impact it has on animals’ lives. We leave a wake of devastation wherever we go, leaving animals homeless, injured and suffering. We need to be more aware of the devastating impact we have on those who do not have a voice of their own, and be more mindful of how our actions affect the Earth. We are guests here. Animals were here long before us and time we start paying attention. Rest Easy Pete
