Universal Broadband Fundsupported project will bring high-speed Internet to the Wahnapitae First Nation in Greater Sudbury. Indigenous people and rural Ontarians to benefit from increased connectivity January 21, 2021 Ottawa, Ontario... The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how much we rely on our connections. Now more than ever, Canadians across the country need access to reliable high-speed Internet as many of us are working, learning and communicating with friends and family from home. Right now, too many Canadians living in rural and remote communities lack access to high-speed Internet. Through the Universal Broadband Fund’s (UBF) Rapid Response Stream, the Government of Canada is taking immediate action to get Canadians connected to the high-speed Internet they need. Today, Marc G. Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, on behalf of the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development, announced $269,000 in funding for Blue Sky Net to bring high-speed Internet to the Wahnapitae First Nation community on the northwest shore of Wanapitei Lake, northeast of Sudbury. This project will connect 74 underserved households to high-speed Internet, including 68 Indigenous households. For the many years that we have worked to expand Broadband in Northern Ontario, we have looked to the Province for help. This project is no different and with the support of the municipality and the Province, at a time where access to Broadband has never been more needed, we are grateful once again for this support. Susan Church, Blue Sky Economic Growth Corporation "Spectrum Telecom is proud to work with Blue Sky Economic Growth Corp. to expand and improve rural broadband internet in the Township of Chisholm .This project could not proceed without the generous contributions from The Township of Chisholm and the Ministry of Infrastructure, as well as the tireless work of Blue Sky Net." CRTC launches consultation to strengthen Canadians’ online safety. The CRTC launched a consultation on its proposed framework to address botnets, harmful networks of malware-infected computers that are under the control of a malicious actor. Botnets facilitate some of the most damaging cyber attacks, including ransomware and identity theft. These attacks cause significant harm to Canadians, businesses and organizations that provide critical services such as hospitals, schools... and government bodies. Measures to block botnet traffic could prevent attacks and help to protect Canadians. The Commission is seeking comments on the appropriateness and need for telecommunications service providers to adopt blocking techniques within their networks, including what safeguards would be necessary to ensure privacy, transparency and effectiveness. The Commission has the authority and mandate to address malicious activity facilitated by botnets under the Telecommunications Act. Canadians are invited to submit their comments by March 15, 2021. "Announced originally in Budget 2019 as $1 billion, today's additional funding of $750 million for the Universal Broadband Fund will help advance projects with partners, like the Canada Infrastructure Bank, to connect Canadian households and businesses in underserved communities over the next six years. This includes a $150 million Rapid Response Stream with an accelerated application process to allow shovel-ready projects to get started right away. With today's announcement, our government has made $6.2 billion available for universal broadband since 2015." https://www.newswire.ca//connecting-all-canadians-to-high-
Any time funding is announced for broadband internet services it’s good news, according to the executive director of Blue Sky Net. Susan Church of North Bay-based Blue Sky Net, whose aim is to facilitate broadband access to unserved and underserved areas, said the $1.75 billion announced Monday by the federal government, in an effort to connect 98 per cent of Canadians across the country to high-speed internet by 2026, combined with almost $1 billion announced by the province last week, is certainly a positive reading for the region. https://www.nugget.ca//feds-province-commit-to-improved-hi

Collectively, we are the catalyst for change, states Susan Church, Executive Director, Blue Sky Economic Growth Corporation. We recognize that Northern Ontario is unique. While there are organizations in southern and eastern Ontario that are doing the same kind of work that we do, the fact that the five of us are collaborating to address the geographic challenges of the Northwhereas individually we couldn’tis what sets us apart and is helping to move the yardstick. http://fednor.gc.ca//si/fednor-fednor.nsf/eng/fn04596.html
