"For a dog, though, harmful, and even life-threatening effects can occur in a short time in a hot car. Dogs cant release heat by sweating, as humans do, so their internal body temperature rises more quickly" https://spca.bc.ca/news/do-not-leave-animals-in-hot-cars/

Dear BMPAH family and friends, We hope that you, your family and furry friends are remaining safe and healthy. As a valued member of Blue Mountain Park Animal Hospital community, the health and safety of our family and friends are our top priority. At BMPAH, we are implementing and adapting plans and protocols based on the best direction from public health guidelines and veterinary authorities, so that our hospital team is able to continue to provide care for our patients. ... As a medical facility, BMPAH already adheres to strict protocols of sanitization and cleanliness within our hospital. We will be taking additional measures to ensure that our hospital is cleaned and sanitized more frequently. We ask our clients to help by using the hand sanitizer available in the reception area when you enter and leave the hospital. We respectfully ask you to stay home, if you are feeling unwell or experiencing flu-like symptoms. We especially ask our clients who recently traveled outside of Canada to self-isolate for 14 days before coming to the hospital. If you had exposure to symptomatic or confirmed positive COVID-19 cases, or have confirmed positive yourself, please contact 811 or 1-888-268-4319 to receive further direction. Please feel free to call our hospital if you are needing to reschedule your appointment or discuss alternate arrangements, to ensure that your pet receives the care it needs. Effective immediately, we will accommodate only 2 clients and their pets in the reception area at the same time. If you see 2 people in the reception area, please call 604-931-1277 or wait in the car or outside. We also ask our clients to refrain from making payments with cash. We will continue to accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and Debt. Note that currently there is limited evidence that pets can be infected with COVID-19. We encourage you to speak to one of our staff if you have questions or need more clarification. Thank you for trusting us with you and your pets care and please do not hesitate to reach out if we can assist you in any way. Best, BMPAH Staff

As warmer weather approaches, we remind you to please keep your pets at home if you cant keep them safe! It can take as little as 10 minutes for the vehicle to reach temperatures where the animal can suffer irreparable brain damage or death, even if the vehicle is parked in the shade with the windows lowered. Heres what to do when you see an animal in distress in a parked vehicle: - Write down the license plate, vehicle colour, make, and model, and ask managers of nearby businesses to page the owner immediately. - Contact your local animal control agency, police, RCMP, or the BC SPCA Hotline (1-855-622-7722) as soon as possible.

I know to stay calm, [but] dogs are going to be jumping around, trying to get attention and raising their core temperatures even more. So this would be very anxiety-causing for these pets and its only been 10 minutes imagine it being 20, 30 minutes. -- #nohotpets #summersafety #safetytips
Attention: ALL DOG OWNERS Before you take your furry friend on a walk/run this summer along the sidewalk, take your shoe off and place your foot on the hot asphalt! Remember that paw pads burn very easily
Happy Saturday BMPAH family! Just a friendly reminder: Feeding a dog/cat human meals can cause several problems.... Human diet may not contain everything a healthy dog/cat needs, and may result in nutritional deficiencies, or overfeeding and obesity. Feeding our pets scraps during human mealtimes can turn our pets into fussy eaters!

With the hot weather coming up this weekend and all next week, lets educate and remind ourselves of these summer safety tips! IF you find a pet in the car and the animal in distress, call your local animal control agency, police, or the BC SPCA hotline at 1-855-622-7722 as soon as possible. Note: It is illegal for members of the public to break a window to access the vehicle themselves; only RCMP and Special Provincial Constables of the BC SPCA can lawfully enter a vehicle. SPCA branch staff and volunteers cannot enter vehicles.
