Do you watch HGTV? As designers and builders, we like to keep upto date on trends and building practices around North America, and HGTV is a great way to see what designers are doing across the country. However, we are constantly shocked to see the cost to build things in the US!!! The prices quoted in the US based shows are SIGNIFICANTLY lower in the US compared to Canada. Much lower Labour and material costs in the US lead our customers to think they can get similar renova...tions for the same cost as shown in Fixer Upper and Flip or Flop. Unfortunately, we have much higher material costs and our labour costs are also significantly higher. Also, flipping a house is not directly comparable to doing a quality renovation. Flippers are looking to improve the look of a house as cheaply as possible. When we do a renovation for clients, we are trying to make sure we use the proper materials and install them with thought, quality and great ‘fit and finish’. If you ever saw one of those flip houses, you’d be shocked at the actual quality of the end product. Boase Design presents the Passingham project. This project featured a narrow kitchen and family room which the client felt was too cramped. Boase Design was able to push out the exterior wall 8 feet to give the house an additional 350 sq ft of usable space. By using custom made 9 ft and 12ft lift and slide doors, we were able to open the rear of the house up to the back yard and view of the pool. This gave us significantly more space for a true chefs kitchen and accent many of the design choices the client made. Modern construction techniques such as helical piers for the addition allowed us to minimize cost and time for this build out.
