Another beautiful fall afternoon at the hives. What wonderful weather in September. It was a very good month for the bees too as many flowers were still in bloom and they could stock up on honey for the winter ahead. Any honey in the bottom boxes (called brood chambers) is always left for the bees. Any boxes above this (honey supers) are harvested by the beekeeper by the end of August. Need honey? A bee hive without a queen is a hive that is slowly dying. To buy a queen these days costs almost $50. So sometimes, it can be better to make your own. Kim made a visit to Bobby's Buzz Bomb hives recently and I'm happy to say her record of never being stung is still intact. Plus, we were able to find a queen in one of the hives.
