The patina on these antique tin toys is just amazing. The 4 door car is made in Germany. Tin toys were made from thin sheets of steel plated with tin, hence the name tinplate. Tin toys were a durable substitute for wooden toys. The toys were originally assembled and painted by hand. The invention of sheet metal stamping machines in 1815 allowed for the mass production of toys. Spring activated tin toys originated in Germany in the 1850s. Interestingly because of strong pro-American products after World War I, the German tin toy market fell away by 1920. These toys would have cost a penny back then. 4 door car $75, 2 door $85. 1961 Jello Hostess Antique Cars Wheel set. It took a long time to collect these sets. The tag line for Jello was, There is always room for Jello. Lots of young boys put that to the test in 1961 so they could collect the next coin. You can just imagine them telling their moms to get more jello at the store. Sometimes they might get two in a package and they even slipped some in hostess Potato chips. 25 of each colour of coin is a separate decade of cars. Stimson Computing Scale Co. made this scale in the middle to late 1800s. This would have been used in a general store setting. In fact this scale was the only surviving item from a small town Saskatchewan Hardware store. This scale was designed in such a way to weigh and price in one step for per pound pricing. So many pounds of nails must have gone through the bowl on this scale. You could weigh directly on the scale up to 10lbs. If heavier the side arm could be used up to 100lbs.
