Q: Which should I do first, cardio or weights? A: As with almost everything fitness related, the answer depends on your goals! However, for the MOST part, people will get added benefits if they put strength training first.... Here are two reasons why: You’ll be stronger and less fatigued when you do weight training first, which can improve your workout performance. This could also help you avoid injury related to being pre-fatigued before you start your workout! Doing cardio last has an added benefit. A study done by the American Council on Exercise found that when people did cardio after strength, their heart rates were higher than they were when they did cardio first. That means they didn’t have to work out extra hard to get their heart rates up into their cardio training zone. PLUS: Because the body uses up stored carbs as fuel for the strength workout, there’s a slight boost in the amount of fat burned during the cardio session. Which do YOU do first!? Here is some positive data.... Its come from the Fitness Industry Council of Canada. Body Fit is a member of the Ontario Coalition that assisted in putting together the safety protocol for re-opening gyms in Ontario. FIC conducted a reopening survey of our member clubs across the country. Across Canada, out of the 20 MILLION+ workouts since fitness facilities reopened in April, there has been a 0.001% rate of transmission from our member clubs. ... FIC member clubs are known for maintaining strict guidelines to ensure the safety of their clients and staff.

Here’s an amazing story that drives home how it’s NEVER TOO LATE!!! Have you heard of Man Kaur? She is a 104 year old woman from India and when she was 101 years old she won a 100m gold medal at the World Masters Games! And that gold was just one of the dozen-plus others she earned over her short track & field career.... That’s pretty amazing for a couple reasons and just one of them is that she didn’t start running until she was 93. Her son (who was in his 70’s) actually got her start working out at the track. By the time she was 101, she was running 20km every day! That’s more than 12 miles. She holds several world records and also competes in other events such as shot put, javelin, and 60m and 200m sprint. "I am running well, why should I stop?" she told an Indian newspaper. MYTH OR FACT Playing a video game can help stop a craving. . ... . . YES! Researchers found that playing a game of Tetris actually helped people overcome their cravings! Scientists think that playing the game distracted them long enough for cravings (which usually last just a short while) to pass. In a study published in the journal Appetite, college students who were having cravings either played a video game or waited for the computer to load. A quarter of the game players reported their cravings went away. Note: it doesn’t have to be Tetris, according to the researchers. Let’s get REAL about food cravings ... Almost everyone gets them even people whose jobs it is to help others reach their goals! (Hint: ME!) So I am going to tell you exactly WHAT I DO when I feel a craving coming on. ... It's simple... I drink water! And lots of it. Your body sends signals letting you know if you are hungry or thirsty but it's not always obvious what your body is telling you. So, if you are feeling peckish, go for water first and I think you'll be surprised how often your cravings will subside... Don’t let a temporary urge get in the way of achieving your goals! I’ve got a cravings buster tip for you today that is backed by research but you might get some funny looks if you do it in public! Here it is next time you get a craving, tap your forehead with your finger for about 30 seconds! According to researchers at Mount Sinai Hospital, doing this can make cravings less intense, plus it blurs the image of the food you’re craving in your mind!... Interesting right? Tapping your foot on the floor and tapping your ear also works, but not as well as tapping your forehead. Give it a try and see if it works for you!.. NO this is not an early April Fools trick

It's official! Durham Region enters Stage 3 on Friday and that means gyms can open with certain restrictions. I know that there has been a lot of excitement building around this long awaited date and I also know there are lots of questions. In order for us to open safely and assure patrons and health and safety inspectors that we are taking the necessary precautions, I have created an Opening Framework Policy that everyone MUST read and understand. The framework meets and ...exceeds the Provincial guidelines required for gyms opening in Stage 3. This article speaks to the research paper I posted about last week. However, it also speaks to the one key function that health clubs can do to help contain the spread unlike the majority of other businesses that were allowed to open sooner. It's Contact Tracing. Gyms all have access controls that are tied to individuals. The ability to identify who has been there, when and with who is old hat. WEEKLY CHALLENGE TIME! It seems as the weeks go by and we don't get any word on opening up gyms and other recreation facilities, my moods will swing faster and it becomes harder to stay positive. So this week I'm going to try something called the 3-Word Challenge. It’s all about the power of the words you use to describe yourself and/or your situation. ... It’s based on an exercise in the book Change by Brendon Burchard. Here’s how the 3-Word Challenge works: 1. Choose 3 words to describe the person or situation you WANT to be or be in 3 important traits you would embody (ideas: happy, powerful, nurturing, energetic, brave, strong, honest, etc.) 2. These words should resonate with you and set the standard. 3. Place a reminder with those words on them on your nightstand so you see them first thing in the morning. 4. Repeat the words several times during the day. So, if your words are disciplined, strong, and confident, every morning you would start the day saying, I am disciplined. I am strong. I am confident. And you would repeat this several times during the day. When you say them (preferably out loud!) really FEEL how those words change your mood and your sense of control over your actions and your life! Mine are Realistic, Motivated and Resourceful. How’s your Walking After Dinner Challenge going?! Have you found it helpful? Are you going to stick with it after this week is over?! Here’s a quick tip for getting even more out of your post-meal walk. Keep your phone in your pocket (or better yet- leave it at home!) and enjoy your surroundings! ..Unless You Plan on Posting a Video!!... Going for a walk is one of the best ways to lift your mood, come up with new ideas, and generally relax. But that only works if you avoid distractions. Just use this walking time to BE. :) Ohhh and if you can...leave the kids at home!

It's Recipe Wednesday! This Cajun shrimp recipe is keto-friendly and totally delicious! It’s an updated version of a classic barbecue shrimp recipe. Enjoy it with a side salad or some zoodles for a complete meal. It’s sure to become a favorite!... Cajun Shrimp Stir Fry (makes 4-5 servings) 3 slices uncured bacon 1 stick (-cup) (113 g) grass-fed butter 2 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp chili powder tsp thyme 1 tsp ground black pepper 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tbsp Old Bay or other crab boil seasoning 1 tsp Tabasco or other hot sauce 1 lb (680 g) shrimp (31-40 size works best) cup (125 ml) water Cook 3 slices of bacon in a frying pan until cooked but not crispy. Remove from the pan and place on a paper towel. Preheat oven to 375F (190C). Add all the ingredients except shrimp to the bacon grease in the pan, simmer for about 5 minutes. While that’s simmering, place the shrimp in an open baking dish and set aside. Chop the bacon and stir into the shrimp. When butter is melted and seasonings have combined, pour the liquid over the shrimp and stir to coat. Add water if necessary to fully coat the shrimp. Bake uncovered for about 15 minutes. Enjoy!

This week your challenge is to take a short walk after dinner EVERY night! ... If dinnertime doesn’t work for you, then you can do this after ANY meal and still get the same benefits . I chose dinnertime because that can be a great time to schedule a walk with others, plus it’s a great way to cap off the day. We all know how getting outside for a walk can be a huge boost for your mood ... AND that walking is good for our hearts, muscles and bones/joints. But did you know that walking after a meal has some extra benefits? Talking a post-meal walk can: Help keep your blood sugar in check. Help you digest your meal more easily. An easy walk can help settle your food and alleviate indigestion. Note: This doesn’t have to be an intense power walk! He started the show at the end of March to share good news in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. (If you don’t know who Krasinski is, you may recognize him from The Office or the Jack Ryan series you have been binge watching:))... Have you tried to stop touching your face and are shocked at how hard it is?!!! On average, people touch their faces as many as 23 times an hour! We all know we SHOULD stop doing it because it contributes big-time to spreading germs and viruses but why is it so hard to quit?... It’s because for most of us, touching our face is a deeply ingrained habit that we use when we’re feeling certain emotions (embarrassed, worried, surprised, nervous) or if we have an itch or muscle tension. Because it’s so ingrained, it can be hard to recognize you’re even DOING it! How can you stop a habit you’re not even aware of? One of the things researchers suggest is NOTING when you touch your face, and if you have any particular triggers. Then, work from there to cut back. What else do the researchers recommend? Answer: Avoiding finger foods that you eat with your hands. MYTH OR FACT Does having a fever weaken your immune system? .... . MYTH ! A fever actually can help your immune system fight infections in two ways. First: a higher body temperature speeds up how fast your cells function, including those that fight illness. That means they can respond to invading germs faster. Second: an elevated body temp makes it harder for bacteria and viruses to thrive in your body. Note: you should always call your doctor if you have any concerns or if you’ve been sick for a few days, have a really high temp, and/or other accompanying symptoms. Ever stay at a nice hotel and feel instantly soothed and relaxed? Your surroundings have a MAJOR IMPACT on how you feel. If your bedroom makes you feel blah when you go in there, this is the PERFECT time to bring some of that hotel feeling home! ... Of all the rooms in your house that deserve to be a relaxing haven, it’s your BEDROOM. It’s where your body relaxes and recovers from the day, and refreshes for the next But it’s often the room that gets the least attention. I’m not talking about an expensive remodel. You can do all of the following for FREE and it will make a big difference... Declutter. We can become so used to having clutter around that we don’t even see it any more! Get rid of things you don’t use or need, and THEN organize what’s left, or return it to the room it belongs in. Open the windows for fresh air, weather permitting. Clean and vacuum under your bed. :) Dust, clean, and vacuum everything (and under everything) else including your curtains and your lamps/light bulbs. Make sure to dust the area where the wall and ceiling meet. Change your sheets and clean/air out your comforters. Tidy up your closet and make a pile of clothes you no longer wear for donation. When you go to bed at night, it will feel like you’re in a whole new room!

When Cinco de Mayo landed on Taco Tuesday, we knew we had to do something special to help celebrate. Introducing our micro-batch of Ciderita, a margarita-inspi...red hard apple cider. Aged in a tequila barrel and infused with sea salt, fresh limes, orange bitters and a touch of agave syrup. This is a complex, multi-layered drink with a toasty oak nose, fresh lime and apple flavours, finishing with a hint of sea salt. Pair it with soft tacos from Annina's Bakeshop & Cafe to commemorate Mexico’s victory in the Battle of Puebla. Salud!

BEHIND THE SCENES POST: HOW I’VE BEEN STAYING ON-TRACK DURING CHAOS You never know how much you appreciate your everyday life until everything changes! I don’t know about you, but I’ve found myself feeling stressed, lost, anxious and sometimes excited as a result of it all...... So I made a commitment to myself to double down as much as possible on my schedule, which always helps me feel more balanced and in control over my day. It’s made such a big difference, because it has given me a STABLE BASE to operate from! When you have a firm foundation, it helps you to be PROACTIVE vs. REACTIVE. On a practical level, that means that every day, I get up at a regular hour (7:30am), I eat and head into the gym to work on projects, I leave at 4:00pm and either start dinner or help Melanie with dinner (usually the later ) Then after dinner its family work out time. We either head to the gym, (yes that’s a fringe benefit for paying the bills) or we ride our mountain bikes. Not every day is the same but they will follow a similar schedule. It’s had big benefits. I know that when we re-open, I’ll have worked my way down the never-ending to-do list, I spend quality time with the family, I’m productive and I’m getting in quality physical activity. I’ve put a few pics below of the things that have kept me sane. I finally installed a security camera system in the gym (long time coming), I’ve been scheduling zoom workouts twice per week with the baseball team I help coach and I’ve done a huge overhaul of my client management systems (sorry no pics for that) and I’ve taken a course to implement corporate wellness programs. TIP THURSDAY I have a super important tip for you when it comes to having a flexible, strong body that moves with ease! It’s all about CONSISTENCY. Taking just a few minutes each day will get you better results than doing an hour-long session once a week.... All you have to do is make time for it! You can work on your flexibility right after your workout or at some other point during the day. In just a few days, you’ll start to notice real progress in how bendy you are! Your hips, back, and shoulders will thank you for it!

It’s so much tougher than it sounds but the payoffs could last for years!... Health experts say to cut back our risk of contracting the Coronavirus, we should stop touching our face. This is good health advice all the time so picking up this habit now will go a long way toward avoiding other bugs and viruses in the future, too!
