Facts we should all know: WWI - Close to 61,000 Canadians were killed and 172,000 wounded. Many more returned home broken in mind and body. Newfoundland suffered 1,305 killed and several thousand wounded.... WWII - 1.1 million Canadians served in the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force. Close to 42,000 killed and 55,000 wounded. Korea - 26,000 Canadians participated on the side of the United Nations, and Canada sent eight destroyers. Canadian aircraft provided transport, supply and logistics. 516 Canadians died, 312 of which were from combat. Vietnam - The Canadian government did not officially participate. 30,000 Canadians served in the American armed forces during the war. At least 134 Canadians died or were reported missing in Vietnam. Bosnia - About 40,000 Canadian military personnel have served in the region as peacekeepers since the early 1990s. According to the Canadian embassy responsible for Bosnia and Herzegovina, 23 soldiers have died in the operation. One died as a result of enemy action, while the rest were killed in accidents. Afghanistan - The number of Canadian Forces' fatalities resulting from Canadian military activities in Afghanistan is the largest for any single Canadian military mission since the Korean War between 1950 and 1953. A total of 159 Canadian Forces personnel have been killed in the war since 2002. Iraq - Eight Canadians were taken hostage in Iraq over the course of the conflict there; one, Zaid Meerwali, an Iraqi-Canadian truck driver, was killed in 2005, and another Iraqi-Canadian, Rifat Mohammed Rifat, has been missing since 2004 and is presumed dead.
