In the event of a fire, every second counts, fire hydrants covered in snow and ice hinder our ability to save property or persons that may be trapped in a fire. We ask the residents of Bonavista, and any community, to help your local fire departments and firefighters by keeping fire hydrants near your home clear of snow and ice. When shoveling a fire hydrant it is important to shovel not only the access to the hydrant from the roadway, (as long as it is safe to do so) but also 3-feet around the fire hydrant.

With all the snow that has fallen and will continue to fall, we would like everyone to please be safe. Roads are slippery and visibility is reduced, do not venture out unless you absolutely have to, and reduce your speed accordingly. As always, keep fire safety in mind, as our firefighters will have difficulty getting out of their driveways in the event of an emergency.

The Bonavista Fire Department would like to take this opportunity to thank the public, businesses, municipalities and various organizations for your continued s...upport in 2020. The department wishes everyone a safe and Happy Holiday Season and reminds everyone about the importance of safety at Christmas time. Make sure all trees are kept away from heat sources, such as heat vents, electric heaters, radiators, and fireplaces. Make sure your tree has a sufficient amount of water. Don’t overload extension cords. Never leave your home or go to bed without unplugging your tree lights. Candles are not to be left unattended and must be extinguished properly. Keep your chimney clean and not just for Santa. Always remember in case of fire, Get Out and Stay Out, Never go back into a burning building. Thank you for your support in 2020. We wish you a Happy and Prosperous 2021.

According to our friends at the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), nearly half (49%) of home fires are caused by cooking. This #FirePreventionWeek, we...’re highlighting why it’s important to serve up safety in the kitchen! This video shows actual footage from our ongoing research burns taking place at our DELCO facility -- showing the growth and spread of a kitchen fire. Make sure you have working smoke alarms, know your escape plan, and continue to #CloseBeforeYouDoze! This experiment was conducted in preparation for the DHS/FEMA funded Study of Fire Service Residential Home Size-Up and Search & Rescue Operations. The experiment took place in a purpose-built test fixture that represents a residential, single family home with 4 furnished bedrooms, a living room, dining area, and kitchen. Instrumentation was placed throughout the home to examine fire spread from a kitchen fire and its impact on occupant survivability. The fire was ignited by heating a pan of cooking oil to its ignition temperature. The fire spread into the wall cabinet adjacent to the stove and subsequently, the adjacent cabinets. Pieces of flaming cabinet proceeded to fall to the ground igniting the base cabinets and flooring. As the fire extended across the ceiling, it ignited additional cabinets which led to flashover of the kitchen. For more fire safety tips, visit closeyourdoor.org!

Kitchen Fire Safety Enforce a kid-free zone in the kitchen, keeping kids at least 3 feet away from the stove. Teach children what smoke alarms sound like and what to do when they hear one. Ensure they know two ways to escape from every room of your home, especially in the kitchen where many fires ignite, and where to meet up outside. It is also important to practice your fire escape plan. Finally, teach children to STOP, DROP and ROLL if their clothes should catch on f...ire. Cooking Safety While cooking, don’t wear loose clothing or dangling sleeves. Check food regularly and remain in the home while cooking. Keep anything that can catch on fire away from the stove, oven or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat. Clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease buildup. Purchase a fire extinguisher to keep in the kitchen. Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the home to make sure all stoves, ovens and small appliances are turned off. Install a smoke alarm near the kitchen, on each level of the home, near sleeping areas and inside and outside bedrooms. Learn more at: http://www.redcross.org//lo/home-family/prevent-home-fires
