Bonne Bay Marine Station & Public Aquarium 04.11.2020

To all of our friends, fishers, and citizen scientists that are the heart and soul of the Bonne Bay Public Aquarium... We are sad to say that out of an abundance of caution we will not be opening to the public this summer. It is simply too difficult in our limited aquarium space, which has lots of high touch surfaces, to safely open our doors to the public. We are instead working on some wholesale renovations of our exhibits including: new tanks, a re-designed touch-tank, ...and other improved exhibits ready for opening on Victoria Day weekend of 2021. To our fisher friends, keep us in mind if you catch anything interesting in your nets and traps, we will be relying on you as we re-stock the aquarium next spring. We will miss sharing the wonder of Bonne Bay with you all this summer, stay safe and enjoy some quality time with nature.

HAPPY WORLD OCEANS DAY! We are all connected to the oceans. They give us life, they regulate our environment, they provide ecosystems for the majority of specie...s on earth. Their health and well being is paramount to our ability to find balance and coexist with natural systems. So on days like today that get lots of attention on social media please, we ask you to make every day "Oceans Day". To learn more about our planet, to foster curiosity in the generations coming up and nurture it. We also want to take this opportunity to point out some amazing local and global companies, organizations, NGO's, etc that are doing awesome work centered around our oceans (there's so many please forgive us, this is not an exhaustive list). Whether it be to foster passion, increase literacy, promote research and beyond... get to know The Big Blue. Your life literally depends on it. Check out this timelapse video of stalked jellyfish that our Director captured a while ago. Stalked jellyfish (staurozoans) commonly walk around with their mouth down on the sediment. Their arms have pompom-like sets of tentacles which have stinging cells on them. The diet of stalked jellyfish is mainly small invertebrates. They may be found on kelp and other seaweeds around the island of Newfoundland. May we celebrate and learn about the wonders of the ocean everyday, but especially today on #WorldOceansDay!

We would like to introduce our new Manager, Christa-Lee Whelan. Christa graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Science in 2012, and then completed an Advanced Diploma in Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management at Marine Institute in 2013. She is no stranger to the Bonne Bay Marine Station as she spent a portion of her undergraduate education completing field courses onsite in 2011. In addition to this, she has over a decade of experience in the field of science and education. Please join us in welcoming Christa in her new role as the Manager of the BBMS!

Our Public Aquarium usually opens for Victoria Day weekend, and our annual Celebrate The Sea Day events (May 16th 2020). We are sad to have to let you all know that, due to the Covid-19 crisis, we have decided to delay our opening for the 2020 season until further notice in the interest of public health. Thank you all for your support, we will let you all know when we have a revised opening date!
