As hard as it is sometimes...

There is always an element of uncertainty in parenting, but in the midst of this pandemic, the uncertainty is amplified for everyone. We are all facing uncertainty. We are all trying to imagine what is going to come next. We are all trying to decide how to keep our families safe.... We are all trying to balance the need of self and the need of others. Leaning over the precipice, looking into the unknown, it may be tempting to fill that space with all of the potential scary things. But there is more than that in our future.

I had CBC Radio playing in the background yesterday (Aug 11), and I heard a speaker mention this phrase (or something close to this). I cannot find anything online in order to give credit and I can’t even remember what show it was to look up the speaker, but I think they may have said it’s an old Andalusian saying. I felt like it was worth sharing even if I can’t track down the origins. Play can provide so much, but people tend to minimize the value of play. It’s seen as triv...ial, a reward for real work, or play is seen as something that needs to be educational. It needs to be structured to fit adult values and concepts. It needs to be directional, intentional and oriented on achievement. There is a shift happening though, and now people are starting to understand the value of free play for children. What about for adults? What about for you? Do you play? See more

Watching kids work with Scout is like watching magic. Kids find so many little parallels between their experiences and what they are doing with Scout, and I get to watch those little sparks of recognition, acceptance and change. Finding meaningful parallels is part of equine assisted counselling. For more information on what this looks like in a session, take a look at my latest blog post: https://bonnieandscout.ca//drawing-parallels-in-equine-as/
