This photo was taken exactly 20 years ago today. Shortly after 12:35pm, when Michael Henry Conn graced our world with his new presence. It was a day, of course, that forever changed my life. He being the third pillar of what would end up being the stabilizing force of a dynamic trio that would forever be grounded in each other. Like a photographers tripod or a child’s tricycle. When one leg, when one wheel is absent, the rest are useless. This picture hangs on my bedroom wall as a constant reminder of the incredibly special bond the three of us have together-right from the very moment you were born. Michael, happy 20th birthday - you complete us.

Lessons from the tree tops.. When I sit quietly outdoors, Im often drawn to staring at the tree tops. Like those who stare vacantly into a fire or into a lake. Its funny how our brains can be so active during moments that seem from the outside to be so serene and so peaceful. Watching the tree tops move in the breeze, makes me think how calm and easy they seem to be. Swaying obediently in the direction from which the wind comes, taking one breeze at a time, no matter how ...hard or soft it is, no matter how warm or cold, or from which way. Such large, solid objects relative to the wildlife and plants that live around them - but still, they make no fuss, never exerting their strength on others, never showing defiance. They just go with the flow, moving with and accepting the breeze as it were part of themselves. From their solid stumps, steadfastly planted in the earth, they never move position, rarely breaking, but just swaying with their life as it comes to them. Calm, quiet and still; steadfast but flexible, they take the seasons as they come. Sprouting fresh leaves with new found passion of spring time; accepting their demise as the depths of winter come over them; embracing the snow and ice as it takes over their branches. They seem unshakable. As I write this, my eye catches a slim green book in the bookshelf across from me. It was a book I remember being immediately drawn to in elementary school; a poetic little book that I purchased second hand at a school book sale. Its title; How Does It Feel To Be A Tree. Its funny, how life always seems to come full circle - just like the seaons. Like the deep and still but moving river Siddhartha spoke about, trees are much the same. Strong and hard with deep roots firmly planted in the earth. Centered. But with a sort of ‘mindset’ that trusts that what nature provides to them is just what they need at the time. That the seasons will always come full circle. That there is no reason to fret or to worry. Just, trust. Trees are all around us, and we can easily take them for granted. But from where I sit, they are a constant reminder that no matter what life throws your way, if you just go with it, learn from it, resist resisting it, spring will always come to you - sometimes sooner than expected.
