English IS weird. However, with good literacy skills kids can successfully navigate the strangeness.
I was really surprised to read this. Have new, college educated teachers become casualties of the eclectic approach to literacy? While this is coming out of the States, I have heard some of the same concerns coming from parents here as well. Low literacy/ pose levels aren't just an issue for lower socio economic individuals, it is also an issue for college grads as well. Perhaps public schools need to address this issue sooner so that colleges don't have to inherit low literacy issues and students don't have to spend their hard earned tuition on reading remediation.
Really interesting article about how recent literacy trends have shaped how our children learn to read. While I am not completely in favor of an education soley based in the "four R's", I think that this article poses an interesting question " Should school boards pursue more experience based curriculm at the exclusion of explicit instruction in basic literacy and or numeracy skills?
