His kind gesture to customers instantly became a critical need he eventually needed help to fill. He requested a loan from Perth Community Futures, and within days, he held a $20,000 cheque. Junction 56 Distillery in Stratford started producing small sanitizer bottles as a giveaway for their customers in March as the COVID-19 pandemic became a growing concern. I found a WHO recipe and realized we have all the materials, Mike said. We had no intention of making sanitizer on a large scale. He posted the giveaway on Facebook the day before Ontario declared a state of emergency and suddenly began receiving requests for sanitizer from police, hospitals and food delivery services. To accommodate the need, the distillery started producing up to 1,000 litres of sanitizer per day. When they received a 50,000 litre order from Bruce Power, Mike emailed Perth Community Futures requesting a loan so they could buy more equipment, bottles and caps. I emailed and got an answer within 10 minutes to say yes we can do this, Mike said. It was dropped off here within two days. With the new equipment and supplies, the distillery is now able to produce 3,500 litres of sanitizer per day and has hired an additional five full-time staff. Sanitizer is now part of the distillery’s business model. The loan gave us a kick start to get more sanitizer out there at a time a lot of places really needed it, Mike said. We’ll continue doing it as long as there is demand. Perth Community Futures is proud to have been part of the process. Mike’s quick thinking and willingness to help was incredible to witness, said Meghan Marshall, general manager of Perth Community Futures.
