First signs of Fall Migrating Geese DID YOU KNOW: Canada Geese were on the brink of local extinction in the 1900’s? The Giant Canada Goose was thought to be e...xtinct from the 1930s until the 1960s but is now the most abundant of all subspecies. Population numbers increased from 980,000 in 1960 to 3,734,500 in 2000! Beginning in the early 1900s, Canada Geese from captive breeding flocks were reintroduced into the southern parts of their former Canadian and US range and also introduced to areas where they may not have bred before. With stricter conservation regulations, wildlife habitat restoration and preservation, and large-scale crop farming created the right environment for this substantial recovery.

Dracula! Believe it or not, this Indian pipe (Monotropa uniflora) is a plant. However, unlike most plants, Indian pipe does not use chlorophyll to perform photo...synthesis and produce sugar. Instead, it preys on nearby trees: tapping into their root systems for sustenance! Of course, because Indian pipe does not have chlorophyll, it is not green but ghostly white. Spooky!
