"Its outrageous and laughable that Nestl is claiming that its water bottling is sustainable," says Maude Barlow, Honorary Chairperson of the Council of Canadians. "Nestl is not only a member but also a founding partner of the Alliance for Water Stewardship, which Nestl is seeking certification from. Certifying Nestle makes the whole AWS scheme essentially meaningless. I think communities around the world will see right through Nestls blue-washing."

"Its time to end water-extraction permits for bottling. Water is for life, not for profit."

2-year ban on expansion of water bottling!
The Ottawa Water Study Action Group has sent letters to the Ontario government urging them to take action to stop further water extraction from Nestle and curb the use of bottled water provincially. You still have until Dec 1st to send your comments in. Here is a suggested action alert: https://secure.canadians.org/ea-action/action
Time to Boycott Nestle... who continues to draw water in periods of drought in Ontario, who just bought a new well in the same region, outbiding a MUNICIPALITY who wanted to buy it to increase its access to water and water security. Never forget that Nestles CEO famously said: Water is NOT a human right, it should be priviatized.

Shoal Lake 40 First Nation just declared a state of emergency today following the collapse of their only lifeline to the outside world. The aging community-owned ferry, the AMIK II, which provides summer access to the community has failed to meet Transport Canadas latest inspection and will require significant and lengthy hull repairs. All vehicular access, including normal health services and essential water delivery is now cut off. Shoal Lake 40 has been on a boil water order for 18 years and replacement potable water is trucked in from Kenora. The Council of Canadians is hosting an action alert where people can send messages demanding a resolution to this immediate need, and the better solution of freedom road.
