I am so many things. . Among them, I am this little girl’s mom. . I don’t want to tell her that she can do anything in this vast world. I want to grow up knowing in her bones that that’s true. Because she watched her mama do it.... . . . . #gotitfrommymama #rolemodel #parenting #girlmom #momlife #love #advice #yegmoms #mama See more
My friend a land colleague wrote this article and o think it’s GREAT!
I was a guest contributor to the next issue of Birth Issues! I wrote an article on Multidisciplinary care in the 4th trimester! I hope you all read it. If you’d like, stop by Pine Integrated Health Centre where we get copies.
Check out some of the products I often recommend to my clients!!
I’m so fortunate to work with amazing practitioners who are changing the game for the better!
Excellent article and episode of white coat black art on CBC about incontinence! Thanks @kirsten my wonderful Physio colleague for sharing with me! https://www.cbc.ca//it-s-time-to-break-the-taboo-around-pe
My colleague, good friend, and client wrote this AMAZING article in her early postpartum days about her experience after having her second child. I can’t stress enough how important the 4th trimester is for moms, babies, and families. Prepare for birth, but also prepare for postpartum! Take a read and show her some love
This is an amazing article. Interviewed professionals include Mallory Becker - Registered Psychologist from Pine Integrated Health Centre, Medical Doctor Life of Dr. Mom - Stephanie Liu, and Pelvic Physiotherapist Kathe Wallace. This is the type of collaboration that I LOVE to see in maternal health.... Return to sex postpartum is a heavy topic with so many expectations attached to it. Give this a read and let me know what you think!
If you want to change the world, go home and love your family. . I think Mother Theresa said that. . There are a lot of things that I’d like to see changed in my community, city, province, country, and world. But, it would be pretty outrageous of me to demand change of anyone else before I’m doing everything that I can.... . Instead, I’m going to be the change I wish to see in the world. And I’m going to raise my kids with that philosophy in mind . Ps. My 3 year old is drinking water, not wine See more
A short and sweet little read about a topic I talk about everyday with patients. Essentially, take yo time with it.
Great information by Dr. Liu!!!
We don’t get pelvic physio as part of our healthcare system so I highly recommend seeking it out for yourself!!
Team work makes the dream work!
What do menstural cups, arts & crafts, West Uganda, and me all have in common? THIS VIDEO! Check it out and let me know what you think!
I love being able to tell clients they can go to x class at FYL. I trust fully that their programming is in line with what I want for my clients’ pre and post natal bodies!!!
Repeat after me: there should be no pain with sex. . Apprehension with the first few times back? Sure. Mild discomfort until things get going? Sure. Struggling to find your new best positions that take into account comfort, your changed breasts, etc? Sure.... But pain during or after? Nope. . When a woman is cleared for sex at 6 weeks, that usually means that there is no medical reason why inserting a P into the V will be problematic . SEMICOLON HOWEVER COMMA . If you’re one of the approximate 80% of women who experience perineal tearing with vaginal birth, if you’ve had a C-section, or if you’re breastfeeding, those can all contribute to pain and vaginal dryness...which is going to be a barrier to pleasurable sex after baby. . The answer is not just relax or have some wine or apply this numbing cream 10 minutes before . If you’re experiencing pain with sex, or if you’re newly postpartum and concerned about your return to intercourse, please book in for pelvic physio. . I’ve seen too many women burdened by this for too long. It can affect your mental health, your self esteem, your relationship with your partner. . #physiocanhelp See more
Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you. Spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life. -Amy Poehler . This group of individuals has had an enormous role in shaping the person I am today, and where I am in my life. .... I’m so grateful to have grown up with them. Everything I’ve gone through, I’ve done it with them by my side. . I’ve laughed my hardest with them, cried my hardest with them, experienced my biggest triumphs and hardest losses with them. I’ve even learned what not to do from their mistakes. . To say I’m lucky to have them in my life is an understatement. . I’m on my way to Canmore in the Rocky Mountains to celebrate @mryks getting married. I can’t wait to celebrate her!!!! . #bestfriends #missingnick #myfriendsarebabes #myfirstloves #truelove #solucky See more
Maternal mental health. The body remembers. A topic near and dear to my heart. I don’t know how many times I’ve asked my clients about their births and they either can’t talk about it or get emotional, or similar. ... Research has shown that birth memories are the types of memories that don’t fade. Positive memories become more so over time. Negative memories become more so over time. Sometimes we assign meaning, even identity, to our births. Sometimes our first birth experience dictates if (or how) we’ll have more children. Sometimes our birth experience affects how we bond with our babies, and how we interact with our partners. From a physio standpoint, I often see how the body holds on to birth trauma or birth memories. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your physical health is to process those memories from a mental standpoint. Then we can make some real progress. If you’ve had an experience like this, I hope you have found peace with your birth story. I have many resources for support in this area if you’re interested. DM me. See more
One postpartum visit is not enough. . It’s simply not enough to talk about the complexities of how a woman is doing during the biggest transition of her lifetime. . How is your physical recovery going?... Do you experience urinary leakage? Do you experience pain in your back or pelvis? Do you experience difficulty with controlling gas or stool? Do you feel like you can fully empty bladder and bowels? Do you have a heaviness or bulging sensation vaginally? Do you have pain with intercourse? Do you have a plan for return to activity in this postpartum period? Do you experience pain with nursing? Do you have any cracks, blisters, fissures or bleeding on your nipples? Are you confident in your abilities to breastfeed your child? Does baby feed for less than 5 minutes or more than 40 minutes? Does baby frequently come on and off your nipple during feeds? Do you struggle with exhaustion? Do you have a lot of worry? Are you very irritable, quick to anger? Do you cry easily? Do you fear being alone or leaving the house? Do you have scary or unwanted thoughts about you or baby? Are you confident in yourself as a mother? Do you struggle with body image in this postpartum period? Are you intentionally restricting food intake to pursue weight loss? Do you have periods of eating where you feel out of control? Do you hide food intake from your partner or family members? Do you eat when you’re hungry? Can you go greater than 5 hours without feeling hunger? Do you struggle with bloating, gas, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea after eating? . This isn’t even an exhaustive list. How can your doctor ask you all of these things? In addition to asking about baby, and doing a physical exam? . This is why @pine_health_yeg has to exist. So that women who would have otherwise gone unsupported in this stage of life will find a soft landing place. I truly think that small shifts in how well supported a mother is in the postpartum period can have a huge impact on the trajectory of her whole family. . What was your postpartum check up like? And how would you answer some of these questions now? . See more
Growing an entire human from scratch is hard work! . A study out of Duke university showed that in the long run, humans cannot sustain using more energy than 2.5 times their base metabolic rate (or how much energy the body uses as rest). . Pregnancy energy use peaks at approximately 2.2 times the base metabolic rate!... . It makes sense when considering the cellular energy it takes to build another person with an entire nervous system, musculoskeletal system, digestive system, etc! Maybe even more than 1 for my fellow moms of multiples! . So when your body is telling you to sleep in the first and third trimesters - SLEEP! . I can remember the pregnancy fatigue that I experienced very well. It was unlike any fatigue I had known before! . What was that fatigue like for you? . Art by @tinamariaelena See more
So THIS is why my cross fit patients love their sport so much!
Do you ever look at your kids and think: I MADE THAT!? . The female body is so amazing in its complexity and capacity for change. Pregnancy and childbirth take your body to the limit in terms of physical adaptation within a short time frame. . The only constant when it comes to female bodies is this: it will change. I’m 1 year postpartum after my 4th kiddo and still breastfeeding. My body has not known anything more consistent than about 9-12 months in 6 + years...and won’t a...gain until approximately 6 months after I’m done nursing. . Give thanks to your body today. Whatever stage your current body is in (pre-conception, pregnant, days, weeks, months or years postpartum, in between kids etc), appreciate that it’s done an incredible thing. And be prepared for more changes! See more
