Today is fret installation day for the black limba and the mahogany guitars.

For this weekend’s project, a bending form and detachable second ram for bending the cutaway on my upcoming 000 guitars.

I’m going to do something different...While I work on completing the mahogany and black limba guitars that are currently in-progress, I’ll also start working in parallel on my next project. That’s different (for me). The plan is to build two similar, but quite different guitars. Both will be made from butternut re-sawed from the same boards, as seen here. (Second pic shows the butternut wiped with mineral spirits to preview how it’ll look under a finish). Both will have Engel...mann spruce tops. Both will be 000/OM sized bodies. Both will have a cutaway. Both will have the neck/body joint at the 12th fret. Both will have necks and fretboards of the same materials. One will be built with a center sound hole and normal symmetrical X bracing (pic 3). The other will have multiple sound holes and be braced using my offset asymmetrical bracing pattern (pic 4). I often get asked how a guitars tone is affected by movement of the sound hole and changing the bracing. My normal answer is theoretical and a bit hand-wavy. No more. With the completion of these two guitars, I’ll record them and have a practical example of the similarities and differences. Stay tuned. It should be interesting!

Lacquer on quilted mahogany and black limba bodies has been levelled, wet sanded, and buffed to a nice shine.

Having handed off the job of selling a few guitars, I can now be creative again and get back to building. Progress on the black limba guitar.
