DYK: The spectacular colour change of the leaves and fall foliage isn’t the result of weather conditions, rather, leaves change colour because of the amount of daylight and photosynthesis. Here are some great local vantage points to see this spectacular event: Calgary - Memorial Drive, Confederation Park, Nellie Breen Park Peter Lougheed Provincial Park... Kananaskis Village Banff National Park Lake Louise See more

Featured Favourite: Dwarf Birch The Dwarf Birch has small, dark-green circular leaves that turn to vibrant reds, purples and orange hues in the autumn. This native shrub has high-resistance to moist areas and in fact, prefers moist, well drained areas. Drought tolerant once established and a very cold hardy shrub. We have Dwarf, River and Hybrid Birch in stock, discounted to 15% off throughout the rest of the season - while supplies last!

Today we are on Vole Patrol! Voles are rodents that cause trouble in the winter for homeowners in our area by feeding on tree bark, exposed roots and ground bulbs, and creating tunnel systems in your grass under winter's snow cover. To prevent a vole invasion, keep your grass trimmed and maintain grass-free areas around trees, shrubs and gardens, or apply vole-guards around trees and shrubs (cylindrical mesh guards). Reach out to pest control if you want to set traps or if you suspect you already have an issue. A stealthy outdoor cat from the local animal shelter may also do the trick!

DYK: Most trees and shrubs are pruned during the winter months (October - March) when the plant is dormant? Pruning stimulates growth, encourages overall health and longevity, and allows you to get creative in shaping the plant. Make sure you don't bury the tools you need to prune as you pack up your landscape for the season!

Sparkling or Still? Your shrubs and trees will benefit from a good soak of water before the ground freezes, getting them through Winter and Spring in better condition. Make sure you water before you put your hose away for the winter!

Dividing Perennials // There are many reasons why you should consider dividing your perennials; rapid growth and limited growing space could result in crowding for other plants, bare spots in the middle of your plant or reduced/smaller flowers because the plants size means too much overall growing effort. Dividing plants also means more plants for other areas of your landscape and opportunities to trade with fellow green thumbs! Most perennials do best when divided every thre...e to four years. Here are some guidelines for splitting out your plants: Only divide plants that are big enough to separate into worthy, new plants. Water the plant well a few days before to soften the soil Loosen the entire plant with a shovel to expose the root ball; try to keep the roots as intact as you can Shake out or rinse the root ball with water to remove as much soil as you can. This makes it easier to divide the plant Pry apart or cut the plant so the each new section hosts both leaves and roots - both crucial to the success of this effort Transplant as soon as possible at the same depth as the pulled plant and water well! Cover the soil with mulch to help conserve moisture while your new divisions become established. Divide your perennials in Spring or fall; this practice can be stressful on the plantsand they'll recover better from the shock in cool, moist conditions.

It’s September, but don’t worry if you’re still working on your landscape; we have an amazing selection of low maintenance trees, shrubs, and perennials, and our inventory (with the exception of plugs) is 15% off. We just received a new shipment of perennials such as Yarrow and this beautiful purple Aster that are happily planted in late summer and into the Fall months. Fall planting questions? We would love to help, just come by the farm :)

Labour Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers. Labour Day has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest. In celebration of Labour Day, we want to give a special thanks to our Bow Point team for their incredible work this season; they are passionate, knowledgeable, energetic individuals who work really hard in support of our clients and Bow Point. Our hats are off to you! Also... thanks to those who advocated for long weekends! Enjoy!

A little Fall work goes a long way in getting your landscape prepared for Winter, and time spent now will make your Spring effort that much easier! Here is a brief checklist to help you get organized: Fall is a great time to plant both trees and perennials, and transplant anything you wish to move or split. To transplant, dig a hole twice the root ball’s diameter with loose soil backfilled in so that the roots can take hold and then water well.... Prepare garden beds for Spring so that you can get to planting early. Clean out plants and material that has met its expiration, cut back your perennials and mix in Bow Point's nutrient-rich compost to inject crucial nitrogen back into your beds. Cut your grass to about 2.5 inches long before a hard frost sets in, aerate it if your soil is compacted, rake a thin layer of topsoil or compost over your grass to prepare it for dormancy, and add some of our native grass seed mix to the topsoil to create a more drought tolerant space that has the strength to choke out those pesky weeds! Questions? Come by and ask away - we are here to help!
