UNMASKED MONDAY-Meet the Coach behind the mask Aka Coach Birley, Aka Big Guns, Aka the Mobility Guy - Trace is a movement and mobility specialist who also specializes in a variety of modalities from FST to Kettlebell Conditioning. In his own words: My exercise background started with athletics, playing lacrosse for most of my life. Not long after, I began to focus on working out & eating better! This helped me progress and excel in the sport.... After my lacrosse career, I knew that working out and eating well was a game-changer for me. This passion turned into my career and I've been happy to help lots of people invigorate their passion for health and wellness. You're probably wondering why people call me the "movement and mobility guy". When I started lifting heavier weights, I paid no attention to the finer details. I started noticing the side-effects I was feeling. This lead to many injuries, feeling tense, stressed, tired, and unable to progress. Once I was a trainer, I began studying countless amounts of courses and found a passion for helping others stay in the gym and progress movements without their joints feeling wrecked. I love helping others optimize their movement and boost their recovery. Working out shouldn't make things worse, it should make them feel better! UNMASKED MONDAY ~ Meet the man behind the mask AKA Coach Keeks, aka gym dad - Keelan is the sole Owner of BPM and has been Training/Coaching/Instructing for over 14-years. Specializing in movement/mobility and diverse exercise modalities, Keelan takes a holistic but pragmatic approach to life and fitness. Fitness is part of life. You’re never too young, too old, or too ‘broken’ to stay active and have fun doing it. My goal is to help Victorians realize this, but also s...tick to my principles in doing so. I believe in integrity and transparency. I will never prey on the insecurities of others, sexualize my content for gain, or accept anything but an environment where every ‘body’ feels welcome. Growing up, I felt very insecure and had a tough time in social settings. I never want anyone to feel like that here. NEW MASK GUIDELINES FOR FITNESS ACTIVITIES As of 6:30pm last night, the Province passed their official mask order which states that masks are required while in indoor public spaces except "while participating in a sport or fitness activity at a sport or fitness facility." Masks are still required in all common spaces, which means you must still wear a mask into the studio, while grabbing equipment, putting equipment away, and while leaving the facility. We do still encourag...e you to wear a mask, but it is not mandatory while exercising. If you need a disposable mask we have them at the desk for you, we also now have our BPM branded masks which you can purchase on-site or online as well. In accordance with updates to Provincial Health orders delivered on November 19th, BPM will no longer offer high-intensity classes until further notice. We will provide small low-intensity strength-based classes, open access hours, virtual classes, and personal training in the interim. Class capacity is limited to 8 participants who are required to wear a mask and stay within their defined workout zone for the duration of the class. On Thursday of last week, the Provincial Health Officer ordered all HIIT to be cancelled until further notice. Late yesterday, they changed their order to include all group fitness classes, including strength conditioning, to be suspended temporarily until the Province develops new guidance. However, individual workouts and personal training can continue. In accordance with these new orders, BPM will pivot again, to offer Supervised Individual Workout times in place of o...ur regularly scheduled classes, in addition to our virtual classes and regular Open Access times. Your currently booked class slots will remain unchanged. This will still provide you with the opportunity to continue to benefit from our space and the guidance of our team, while adhering to these new health orders. Once the Province develops these new guidelines we will adapt quickly and accordingly to continue to keep you healthy and safe. This is a difficult time for everyone and fitness facilities are no exception, we appreciate your understanding and patience as we navigate these new challenges. SQUAT BETTER Have you hit a squat plateau? Have a hard time getting full depth with heavy weight? Or just want to improve your power? Try these 4 dynamic squat variations: 1 Pause squat - perform a 4-second pause in the bottom of your squat to improve your strength out of the pocket. ... 2 Pulse squat - at the bottom of the squat perform 2 to 4 pulses repeatedly coming up and down 30-45 3 Segmented squat- break your squat into 3 segments, perform each with a little pause and reverse on the ascend. 4 Wobble squats - using 2 kettlebells and bands, hang the kettlebells from the ends of the bar and perform your squat. This recruits more stabilizer muscles and challenges your core to remain engaged throughout the squat. Need more help with your squat?
