Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. On this day in 1990 homosexuality was officially de-classified a mental illness. Today we celebrate sexual and gender diversities across the world. We also acknowledge and pledge to work against the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and all people with diverse sexual orientation or gender identities both globally and within our own communities. #IDAHOBIT2021 #loveislove #LGBTQ2S

Happy Nurses’ Week! This week we celebrate all the amazing nurses we work with! It’s been a really tough year and so many nurses have gone above and beyond to adapt to the changing needs of the pandemic while still providing compassionate care Thank you to all the nurses but especially to those we work with across the departments at Brampton Civic and Georgetown Hospital.

Continuing our posts in honour of Black History Month today's links spotlight Black Midwives in Nova Scotia's history. "Herbal Medicine and midwifery were seen as a significant remedy to the lack of health care or provisions around them seeking proper form of medical practice. Due to the isolation of communities, and prohibition from certain medical services, herbal medicine and midwifery was practiced by the Black Pioneers of the 1800's, the effectiveness of midwives and of natural remedies for illnesses became significant to the black loyalist communities." https://robynbukowski.weebly.com/-a-midwife-in-nova-scotia.
While statistics may be more readily available in the states, the experiences of black birthing people in Canada share many similarities with their American counterparts. This article discusses the challenges faced and some of the ways people try to breakdown barriers.
Mattie Mayes, a black pioneer midwife in Sasakatchewan was known as the matriarch of her community. "Mattie would walk for kilometres at a time to help deliver babies. She did this many times, including when doctors weren’t around."
