Mikey had a big adventure at VCA Canada Mississauga Oakville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital last week! Not only did the internal medicine team spend time with him, the neurology department took a look at him too! Mikey’s spinal CT showed vertebral malformations, mild scoliosis and slight malalignment. These results are most likely congenital (present from birth). He has no restrictions to his activity but we should try to prevent him from jumping from high heights.... Mikey also had a CT of his skull. The radiologist report is back but the internal medicine team is still awaiting nasal biopsy results before deciding the best treatment options for him. Although Mikey has been living at the shelter longer than we want him to, he gets lots of love and attention. He is such a happy boy! When the staff aren’t chasing him around to wipe his nose, you can find Mikey playing on the cat tree or basking in the sun at the front office. As you can imagine, Mikey’s veterinary costs have been considerably higher than we initially thought. Please consider making a donation to our HOPE Fund so Brampton Animal Services, along with our amazing donors, can continue to provide the best care for Mikey and our other shelter pets in need. #HOPEFund #veterinarycare #donate #brampton #BramptonAnimalServices #MOVEH

- : Some of you might remember ‘Lamby’ (now named ‘Luna’) who we featured last summer/fall with numerous posts called Lunch with Lamby. Well, we’re happy to report that a few days ago, she celebrated her 1-year adoption anniversary! The staff at the shelter expected it to take (at minimum) a few months for ‘Luna’ to settle and become more confident in her new environment however, her new family let us know they were very surprised when ‘Luna’ started to explore... her new home within only a few weeks. Her adopter tells us she loves to snuggle and is doing fantastic in her new life. Congratulations! We wish you many years of love and happiness together. #adoptionupdate #patiencepaysoff #success #liveloverescue #BASalumni

Poor 'Marley'...we featured her almost three weeks ago during our Pet Valu adoption event and despite the views & shares of her previous post, we've received little interest in the adoption of her. Yes, she's a mature cat and yes, she needs to stay on a urinary diet for maintenance, but she's not on any medication and she's got so much love to give! Please help us find her a new home after being surrendered after 11 years. Further details about her can be read in her previous post (if you scroll back a bit) or you can contact the shelter via phone or email for more information. #Marleyneedsahome #maturemeowsneedlovetoo #secondchances #beautifultortie #adopt #adoptthiskitty

Remembrance Day 2020 looks a little bit different this year. Usually, we proudly display our poppies, honour our war veterans with parades and take some time to reflect on the history of Canadian soldiers. With COVID-19, parades are not common place and we are certainly not out and about as much but our Canadian pride is as strong as ever. Veteran's Week was this week and with that, Veteran's Affairs Canada has released some incredible resources to help your kids learn about our history from home. ’ # What is it you ask? #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that occurs each year after Black Friday. First started in 2012, #GivingTuesday is a special day each year meant to unofficially open the giving season. This time of year has typically been associated with spending and shopping some of the more materialistic endeavors that for many, conflicts with the intended spirit of the holiday. So #GivingTuesday encourages individuals to joi...n together and support local charities, such as the Brampton Animal Shelters . How does it work? Participation is simple by donating! Any donations generated from this campaign can be attributed to #GivingTuesday. Just click the link https://www.brampton.ca//Animal-Services/Pages/welcome.aspx and scroll down to click ‘’. Starting today and leading up to the #GivingTuesday movement on December 1st, 2020 we will be featuring some of the animals that have come into our care and needed significant surgeries and treatments. We want to give our followers an idea of how costly these procedures are and why donations to our HOPE FUND are so important and appreciated. And that’s itit’s that easy! Please SAVE THE DATE and join the millions across Canada & around the world and make a big difference supporting a cause you care about! #GivingTuesday #giveback #donate #rescue #supporttheHopeFund

In case you haven’t heard yetOctober is RVT Month across Canada! Please join us in recognizing the amazing Registered Veterinary Technicians at Brampton Animal Services. An RVTs job here at the shelter is to ensure that high quality (and sometimes on-the-fly!) treatment and care is delivered to all of our animals and can include anything from rodent, to reptile, to domestic pet to even small livestock! They are highly dedicated, knowledgeable and are such a vital part of our... team whether they’re working in the shelter or from home due to the COVID pandemic. We thank you for all that you do to consult the public, assist the staff and help the animals that come into our care. RVTs are essential to veterinary medicine and definitely deserve the recognition. #RVTMonth #thankyou #weappreciateyou #jobwelldone

Wildlife Wednesday: Unfortunately, raccoons (and skunks) are pre-disposed to the Canine Distemper Virus and there may be a time when you come across one that is exhibiting signs consistent with the disease. To help educate our followers, we wanted to share the article below which not only further explains what distemper is, but it also describes some symptoms and suggests what to do if you feel you have come across a raccoon with the virus. Distemper cas...es in raccoons tend to spike in the fall, and though distemper does not pose a threat to human health, dogs who have not been vaccinated for distemper can become infected if they come in contact with an infected raccoon. That being said, there are organizations such as Mally's Third Chance Raccoon Rescue & Rehabilitation Sanctuary (who Brampton Animal Services works with) who are open to trying to rehabilitate the sick animals, as it is possible to be treated, if caught early enough. So please read and share the following article and again, if you see a raccoon displaying abnormal behaviour, please keep your distance and reach out to a wildlife rescue centre such as Toronto Wildlife Centre who can advise how to properly proceed or visit Ontario Wildlife Rescue for a list of contacts. Alternatively, you can reach out to Animal Services by calling 311 for assistance. https://www.blogto.com///10/sick-racoon-distemper-toronto/

' ! Thank you to all of our followers who have joined us throughout the week as we’ve featured adoptable animals. Some have found new homes (YAY!) and some are still waiting. The very popular ‘spooky’ litter of black kittens will be available very soon, so please continue to watch our website. We appreciate that some of you are concerned with adopting them out so close to Halloween, but please trust that as always and for any animal, we do our best to screen applicants for safe and loving homes. And of courseanother thank you to Pet Valu Bramalea & Mayfield Brampton for their continued support of Brampton Animal Services. Please consider visiting them for any of your pet supplies. All of our staff wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. Be safe and celebrate responsibly.

Today we’re featuring 'Marley' who was surrendered to the shelter when a member of the family developed allergies and they were also about to move. ‘Marley’ was timid for a bit; she was unsure why she was now at this new place with strangers, after being in the home for 11 years. But sooner than expected, she began warming up to the staff and showed them what a sweet lady she is! We also discovered she had a UTI (urinary tract infection) and it’s since been treated however, h...er urine recheck after treatment revealed that she still has mild crystals. This is not a huge concern, but the vet we work with has recommended she be on the Urinary S/O diet (which is available at a vet clinic not a pet store) and her adopter would need to continue monitoring her for future signs of discomfort and continue with any follow up vet care if required. We are recommending that ‘Marley’ be the only pet in the home as she’s never lived with other cats. She was exposed to dogs years ago (as per her previous family) however, now being a mature cat, we feel for an easier transition into her ‘retirement home’ that it’s best to not live with dogs moving forward. We also want to keep her stress level as minimal as possible knowing she has the mild crystals and being the only pet will be the best way to ensure she’s only getting the special cat food she needs for maintenance. Otherwise, she’s a sweet affectionate cat who shows her love by rubbing against your legs and she enjoys petting, chin rubs and she appreciates the ‘less is more’ approach to handling. ;) If you are interested in adopting ‘Marley’ or have further questions, please call or email the shelter to request an application or to speak to a staff member. #maturemeow #secondchance #tortietude #adopt

For todays’ post we have a young female rabbit named ‘Nestle’ and her seven babies! The babies were born at the shelter on August 25th and they’re almost finished their weaning schedule. We believe there are 2 males and 5 females, however at this age their gender is hard to determine, so we cannot make any guarantees. ‘Nestle’ did a great job caring for her herd and our staff have done their best to handle the bunnies without upsetting her however, adopters will need to con...tinue to handle them as much as possible to continue to have them grow into social happy rabbits. Rabbits should not be left to simply sit in a cage. They need regular handling, stimulus and exercise. If you haven’t owned a rabbit before, please ensure you research how to care for them properly and if possible, expose yourself to them before you commit to adopting. Sadly, responsibility and allergies are the top two reasons rabbits are surrendered to shelters. They will be available for adoption shortly, so if you’re interested in adopting any of them, please contact the shelter to request an application. That being said, until the staff feel the babies are ok to be on their own; again - please be advised that adoptions may not be done immediately. Choice of colour and (possible) gender can be discussed with a staff member once your application has been approved. #bunbuns #rabbitlove #newkidsontheblock #thebabiesarecutebutdontforgetmomma #adoptresponsibly

**** - All of the kittens have now been adopted or have pending adoptions. We'd like to congratulate the adopters and thank everyone for their interest! Attention all black cat lovers!!! Coming soon we will have eight, yes EIGHT, adorable cuddly kittens available for adoption. This group was found and brought to the shelter when they were about 4 weeks old. There are three females and five males and they’re all quite outgoing, curious and playful and will be great a...dditions to any family. They were recently spayed/neutered so we’ll be monitoring them for a bit to make sure they recover ok from their surgeries. Then we will make each one available on our website when we feel they’re ok to leave our facility; they will not necessarily be posted as a group. Please be advised that we will be collecting applications for them. But, they have been given spooky Halloween inspired names so if you’re a fan of the holiday, then you should be able to tell who is part of the litter! #spookyeight #somanybabymeows #blackcatsrule #adopt

**UPDATE: ADOPTED!!** Another available pet we have for you to meet is 'Miguel' and here's what he would like to share about himself: Hi everyone! I’m a young friendly little guinea pig who enjoys heads rubs and cuddles. I love vegetables SO much that once I hear you coming with them, I’ll start squeaking with excitement! With new people I’m still a bit shy but if you are quiet and take your time, I will warm up to you quite quickly.... If you are interested in adopting 'Miguel' or have any further questions, please call or email the shelter to request an application or to speak to a staff member. #smallanimallove #adopt

**UPDATE: ADOPTED!!** The next available pet we have to introduce is 'Creamsicle' and here's what they'd like to share: Hi there, my name is Creamsicle. Unfortunately, the shelter doesn’t know much about me or my past because my band wasn’t able to be traced, even though they tried really hard. But from the time they’ve spent with me, they tell me they believe I’m a Yellow Mosaic Canary. My gender however remains unknown. A key trait to know about me is that I’m nervous o...f people, so whomever adopts me should be prepared to spend some time getting to know me, so in time we can become great friends! If you are interested in adopting 'Creamsicle' or have any further questions, please call or email the shelter to request an application or to speak to a staff member. #tinyfriend #canarylove #adopt

**: !!** Thank you for all the love and shares. We wish 'Buddy' well in his new home. The first available pet we'd like to introduce you to is 'Buddy', and here's what he'd like to share with everyone: "Hello my name is Buddy and I am a wise older man at 10 years young. I was surrendered by my family, at no fault of my own. I may have 10 years under my belt, but a lot of things are still new to me and scare me. I’m looking for a quiet family with no kids to... spend my golden years with. I love going on walks and while I may not be the cuddliest fella, I do show affection in my own ways. I enjoy my time outside but also feel very comfortable in my house and will pull you back when I’m ready for a break." If you are interested in adopting 'Buddy' or have any further questions, please call or email the shelter to request an application or to speak to a staff member. #labhoundmix #ageisjustanumber #adoptaseniorpet #lookatthoseeyes #AdoptAShelterDogMonth
