Murrisk Abbey in Mayo is beautifully situated on the shores of Clew Bay and in the shadow of the majestic Croagh Patrick. The abbey was founded about 1456 by the Augustinian friars because ‘the inhabitants of those parts have not hitherto been instructed in the faith’. The land was granted to the friars by Hugh O’Malley, a local Gaelic chieftain. The ruins consist of an L-shaped building, representing the church, sacristy and chapter room where the Friars met to discuss business and read daily the chapter of the order’s rule.

Hello Everyone, It's been too long since I've been in touch and I hope that everyone is doing well and keeping safe and healthy. After all the activities in June and July related to our move I took a bit of a break and it dragged out a bit longer than planned. Our move and activities related to ending our lease with the church were completed by the first week in August. We kept to small groups working on the move due to public health guidelines and I'd like to take a minute...Continue reading

Good Morning All, this beautiful sculpture Kindred Spirits in Midleton, Co. Cork created by Cork artist Alex Pentek was erected to commemorate the generosity of a Native American tribe towards the people of Ireland at the height of the Great Hunger. On Native American Day we remember the generosity of The Choctaw nation who raised $170 in 1847 which would now be worth tens of thousands of dollars to aid those starving in Ireland during the Great Hunger

A PLACE TO VISIT WHILE IN IRELAND The Door of Reconciliation. In 1492, two Irish families, the Butlers of Ormonde and the Fitzgeralds of Kildare, were involved in a bitter feud. This disagreement centred around the position of Lord Deputy. Both families wanted one of their own to hold the position. This tension broke into outright warfare and a small skirmish occurred between the two families just outside the city walls.... The Butlers, realising that the fighting was getting out of control, took refuge in the Chapter House of Saint Patrick's Cathedral. However, the Fitzgeralds followed them into the Cathedral and asked them to come out and make peace. The Butlers were afraid that if they did, they would be slaughtered, and so refused. As a gesture of good faith the head of the Kildare family, Gerald Fitzgerald, ordered that a hole be cut in the door. He then thrust his arm through the door and offered his hand in peace to those on the other side. Upon seeing Fitzgerald was willing to risk his arm by putting it through the door, the Butlers reasoned that he was serious in his intention. They shook hands through the door, the Butlers emerged from the Chapter House and the two families made peace. Today this door is known as the "Door of Reconciliation" and is on display in the Cathedral's north transept. This story also lives on in a famous expression in Ireland "to chance your arm". https://www.stpatrickscathedral.ie/the-door-of-reconciliat/
