#backtoschool For many young Queens, friendships mean everything. But some friendships come at a cost. Girl-on-girl bullying is often excused as a rite of passage in female friendships (It’s just what girls do) and dismissed as the result of the target’s lack of social skills. Some girls willingly remain a target of bullying as their aggressors cycle between kindness and cruelty to keep them longing for the rare moments of friendship between vicious animosity. When girls ar...e taught to avoid confrontation and tolerate aggression (physical or verbal) especially if the aggressor is someone they admire or trust (such as their own friends), abuse is normalized which leads girls to tolerate abuse in future relationships. Although friendships are important, our girls should be taught to prioritize their relationship with themselves first, so they never have to sacrifice self-respect, no matter the outcome of their relationship with others. Odd Girl Out discusses the origins, tactics and consequences of female aggression while navigating the importance of self-worth in the midst of friendships and confrontation. I highly recommend this to all parents and teachers, and anyone with a young Queen in their life whether they’re your sibling, niece, cousin, or family friend.
