One of the questions we always get asked, particularly by parents, is whether bedroom doors should be open or closed. Overwhelmingly the answer is to keep the door closed. Check out www.closeyourdoor.org. This photo is from a recent fire in the County of Brant, and a closed door held back the majority of the smoke, and may have helped deprive the fire of oxygen, and stopped it's progress through the house. If you are worried about children not hearing the alarm, one solution is to install smoke alarms in all bedrooms. Interconnecting all the smoke alarms provides even more protection, and is required in newer homes. Unsure what is required? Please call our Fire Prevention Division at 519-442-4500 or email [email protected] www.brant.ca/fire

Have you tried making a homemade veggie burger ? They are a great alternative to meat. Fire Prevention Tip: Be careful when cooking with oil! Oil can catch fire when it reaches its ignition temperature without any spark to start it. Make sure you have a pan lid or baking sheet nearby to cover the pan and smother the fire if a fire starts. Do not use water on an oil or grease fire. Turn the heat off and do not attempt to move the pan from the stovetop.... To learn more, visit www.brant.ca/fireprevention #firesafety #fireprevention

These fall days are perfect for kids to play outside and be active. But sometimes, we all need a reminder to slow down while we are driving and to be cautious w...hen kids are outside playing. If you live on a street where you think drivers need a reminder, I encourage you to reach out to your local ward Councillor and request a Kids at Play sign to display in your front yard. A properly maintained sprinkler system can control or extinguish fires when they are still small. But this is not the proper way to inspect and test that system though! Be safe. Maintain your fire alarms and sprinkler systems in commercial buildings. You never know what might happen.

Due to the COVID-19 health emergency, the County of Brant has extended the open-air burning ban until April 24, 2020. The open air burning ban is in place to ...reduce the risk of exposing firefighters to COVID-19 and ensuring their availability to respond to health emergencies. Open-air burning includes brush pile burns, campfires, burn barrels, open fireplace/chimneys and other fires set in open-air. Cooking fires are exempt and are required to be confined (such as a grill or bbq), supervised at all times and extinguished upon completion of cooking. Please contact the County of Brant Fire Department regarding agricultural open-air burns at 519.442.4500. If a fire truck needs to respond to your property due to an open air burn, the homeowner may be billed $477 per truck per hour. We understand that many homeowners are eager to dispose of yard waste. Please note, urban yard waste pick up will occur the week of May 4, 2020. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. County of Brant Fire

The County of Brant has issued an open-air burning ban, effective Friday, March 27, 2020. This ban is to ensure that all fire service resources are available to... respond to the evolving COVID-19 health emergency. The County of Brant Fire Fighters act as back up support to our Paramedics when 911 calls are received. If the Paramedics are delayed, Fire Fighters may be first on scene to deliver life saving measures. It is important that as the Paramedics become busier to respond to health emergencies in our community, that Fire Fighters are available. As such, we have issued an open-air burning ban in an effort to reduce the number of fire-related calls. This ban will be in place until further notice, said Fire Chief Geoff Hayman. The burn ban will be reviewed by April 10, 2020. Open-air burn permits that were previously issued have also been suspended until further notice. In addition to helping to ensure Fire Fighter availability, the ban will also help limit the amount of contact Fire Firefighters have with the public which reduces their risk of infection and promotes social distancing. Open-air burning includes brush pile burns, campfires, burn barrels, open fireplace/chimneys and other fires set in open-air. Please contact the County of Brant Fire Department regarding agricultural open-air burns at 519.442.4500. The County’s Fire Department, Paramedics and staff thank the community for their understanding and cooperation. For more information, contact the County of Brant Fire Department at 519.442.4500
