Our next membership meeting will be November 19, 2021 from 7pm to 9pm Note: Our meetings are open to everyone, Zoom information will be posted here as soon as it is available. .Speaker Notice :Katherine M. Dunnell... Mineralogy, Gems, Meteorites & Geology Technician Department of Natural History Royal Ontario Museum Her presentation- The causes of colour in minerals are mysterious and diverse. Humans have been collecting minerals for many uses, both as a raw material for use as an ore, but also as pigments and adornment. Colour is the first thing characteristic that people are drawn to when they look at a mineral and what every teacher/professor tells geologist-in-training never to use solely for identification. What causes colour in inorganic substances is very different than that in the organic world, and is in part, constrained by inorganic chemistry and physics. There are only 5400 known minerals in our world, which is much less diverse than the organic world. This talk will dive into the causes of colour in the mineral world, and why some geologic conditions create the benchmark standards for colour within the gem and jewellery world. Zoom login information will also be posted here once available. We would like to convey a sincere thank-you to Grieg McCarter, meminer on YouTube, for his excellent presentation on the town of Cobalt, history on silver mining there and his excellent tips on collecting silver specimens.
