Today is orange shirt day - a day to remember and learn about the devastating impact of Indian Residential Schools in Canada. From their inception in 1867 until... the last school closed in 1996, over 150,000 Indigenous children were forced to leave their families and homes and attend schools that were intended to destroy their culture, language, and traditional ways of life. Children in residential schools faced trauma, abuse, and terrible discrimination. Many of them were killed, and thousands of families were torn apart. At Willowbridge, we know that our community is still working to overcome this history. Right here in Brantford, the Mohawk Institute Residential School operated until 1970. Within living memory, many of our neighbors and friends suffered terrible injustice. Today, let’s all try to learn more about the children who survived these schools. Today, as an agency, we are honoring the Indigenous experience and celebrating the resilience of a people that have come so far and faced so many obstacles.
