The Brant Wildlife Festival celebrates nature, particularly Brant geese as they rest and feed on the shores of mid-Vancouver Island before continuing their migration to their northern breeding grounds. This year the Brant Wildlife Festival will be pivoting to ensure the safety of participants due to Covid restrictions. Instead of large public events we will share new and exciting ways to enjoy the Spring Celebration of Nature in our own backyard, and learn a few things alon...g the way. Watch for an amazing Bird Trail Map for self guided tours. MABRRI is putting a new spin on the Bioblitz Event using the I-Nature App on April 16,17,18. More to follow... !

PQB CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT 2020 SUMMARY REVIEW submitted by Lynne Brookes This was the 121st year of the Christmas Bird Count (CBC). This huge international citizen science effort has provided valuable data on North American bird species and numbers of individuals which reveals bird population trends over time. The scientific analysis of these trends provides conservation and political decision makers with information needed to make better conservation policy decisions.... The PQB count circle has contributed data on our winter bird populations for thirty years. The Arrowsmith Naturalists organize the field count teams, the feeder count participants and then compile the data for submission to the Audubon Society for analysis along with thousands of other count circle submissions. 2020 PQB Count Circle results The 2020 count effort made was as great as in the past but was done differently carefully following Covid 19 protocols. Count day for our circle was Dec. 20, 2020. There were a total of 50 individuals in the field and 76 feeder observers. Together these volunteers logged in a total of 267.15 hours of effort. This year a robust total of 126 bird species were identified in our area and a total of 37,893 individual birds were counted. Within the 126 species found, there were (3) new species and (3) unusual species identified in our count circle. Photo: Ronda Murdock
