:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Around 1775 Thomas Hickling, a wealthy Boston-based merchant who was Honorary Consul of the United States in St. Michael, had a wooden house built, named after Yankee Hall, as well as a large water tank with a island in the middle and surrounded it with trees. It is still possible today to see an English oak planted by Hickling. In 1848 the property was purchased by Viscount da Praia, who built the current Park house in 1854 on the site of Yankee Hall. The Viscountess was interested in gardening, and the couple increased the original two acres by planting a beautiful garden with water, shady lanes, and flower trays. In 1896 the Viscount's son erected a memorial to his parents in the garden. The beginning of this century is marked by the royal visit to the Park House. In June 1901 and at the invitation of the Marquis of Praia and Monforte, King D. Carlos I was greeted with a Monarch to Monarch party according to his words of thanks, having spent the night at Casa do Parque for one night. In Parque Terra Nostra you will find endemic flora from the Azores, but also countless native plants from countries with completely different climates from those in Furnas. This adaptation is made possible, thanks to the work experience shared by the Terra Nostra Park team of gardeners, who are able to adapt, in the most ecological way possible, the conditions existing in the Park to the reality in the countries where the plants come from. thus excellent results.
