Toronto Covid Test Results So Far Support Reduced Quarantine: Researchers Anna Kroupina, Open Jaw 20.11.20 Researchers with McMaster HealthLabs say the results of its border study, conducted at YYZ in partnership with Air Canada, support replacing Canada's current two-week quarantine for international travellers with a test-based approach.... Interim results from the border study support a test and reduced quarantine approach such as that being piloted in Calgary, said Vivek Goel, a professor at U of T and co-principal investigator of the study. The study gathered data on the share of international travellers who arrive in Canada with COVID-19 and explored the effectiveness of airport-based oral/nasal testing and self-collected swabs. Between 03SEP and 02OCT, a total of 8,600 air pax arriving at YYZ were tested for COVID-19 and given follow-up tests over the next two weeks. A total of 21,000 tests were administered. The study found 1% of travellers tested positive for COVID-19, with 68.5% of cases detected on the first day, 25.8% in a follow-up test a week later, and 5.6% on day 14. Researchers say the results suggest a test on arrival would detect 70% of positives and that a second test one week later would capture most of the remaining cases thus eliminating the need for a mandatory two-week quarantine for arriving international travellers. Alberta’s COVID-19 border testing pilot allows travellers to quarantine for less time if they test negative at a border crossing, stay within the province for two weeks and take another test on day six or seven. Testing upon arrival with a follow-up test to catch later positive results could provide a reasonable path forward to help keep borders and the economy open while maintaining public safety, said Goel. The full results of the study are expected to be released in JAN. The researchers anticipate the final report will include data for 16,000 participants and 40,000 tests, with information about infection rates by age group and geographic region.

ARTICLE SEPTEMBER 23, 2020 TESTING. TESTING.: IATA’s top priority is safety and the economy International travel is 92% down on 2019 levels. SNIFF FINN DOGS: Finland deploys coronavirus sniffing dogs at airport Finland has deployed coronavirus-sniffing dogs at the Nordic country’s main international **>airport in a four-month trial of an alternative testing method that could become a cost-friendly and quick way to identify infected travellers. Four dogs of different breeds trained by Finland’s Smell Detection Association started working Wednesday at the Helsinki Airport as part of the government-financed trial.... It’s a very promising method. Dogs are very good at sniffing, Anna Hielm-Bjorkman, a University of Helsinki professor of equine and small animal medicine, said. If it works, it will be a good (coronavirus) screening method at any other places, she said, listing hospitals, ports, elderly people’s homes, sports venues and cultural events among the possible locations where trained dogs could put their snouts to work. While researchers in several countries, including Australia, France, Germany the United States, are also studying canines as coronavirus detectors, the Finnish trial is among the largest so far. Hielm-Bjorkman told The Associated Press that Finland is the second country after the United Arab Emirates and the first in Europe to assign dogs to sniff out the coronavirus. A similar program started at Dubai International Airport over the summer. Passengers who agree to take a free test under the voluntary program in Helsinki do not have direct physical contact with a dog. They are asked to swipe their skin with a wipe which is then put into a jar and given to a dog waiting in a separate booth. The participating animals ET, Kossi, Miina and Valo previously underwent training to detect cancer, diabetes or other diseases. It takes the dog a mere 10 seconds to sniff the virus samples before it gives the test result by scratching a paw, laying down, barking or otherwise making its conclusion known. The process should be completed within one minute, according to Hielm-Bjorkman. If the result is positive, the passenger is urged to take a standard polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, coronavirus test, to check the dog’s accuracy. Timo Aronkyto, the deputy mayor of Vantaa, the capital region city where the airport is located, said the program is costing 300,000 ($468,378) an amount he called remarkably lower than for other methods of mass testing arriving passengers. The four sniffer dogs are set to work at the airport in shifts, with two on duty at a time while the other two get a break. Dogs need to rest from time to time. If the scent is easy, it doesn’t wear out the dog too much. But if there are lots of new scents around, dogs do get tired easier, Anette Kare of Finland’s Smell Detection Association also known as Wise Nose said as she gently patted ET, her white shepherd.

Economic damage from Canada’s travel restrictions could become permanent, IATA warns Tuesday, September 15, 2020 Posted by Travelweek Group TORONTO After six long months, everyone from Canada’s airlines to tour operators, consortiums, chains and host agencies have called on the federal government to re-evaluate Canada’s travel restrictions. Now even IATA is wading into the fray.... IATA is urging the Canadian government to support recent COVID-19 testing initiatives by Air Canada and WestJet as a means to safely reopen Canada to international and domestic travel without the need for blanket quarantine measures. Earlier this month Air Canada announced new voluntary COVID-19 testing available at Toronto’s Pearson Airport, while WestJet announced testing at Vancouver Airport. Canada’s 14-day mandatory quarantine for all passengers arriving in and returning to Canada has been in place since mid-March, along with the advisory against all non-essential travel outside the country. ‘‘There are alternatives to the quarantine measures currently in place that can both keep Canadians safe as well as revive the economy, said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO. The ICAO multi-layered approach is one. The work that Air Canada and WestJet are doing on testing adds another dimension. It is critical that the Government of Canada acts on these before the economic and social damages become permanent and the public health consequences of mass unemployment become even more apparent, adds de Juniac. IATA notes that international traffic to Canada has plummeted since quarantine measures were introduced in March 2020. IATA’s recent missive outlines the economic impact on Canada: Revenues generated by airlines with service to/from/within Canada could fall by $22.6 billion (70%) relative to 2019, if restrictions continue, according to IATA’s estimates Nearly 410,500 Canadian jobs and some $39 billion of Canada’s GDP, which is generated by aviation directly and indirectly as well as by aviation-related tourism, are at risk Air transport in Canada supports some 633,000 jobs, directly and indirectly 3.2% of Canada’s GDP is supported by the air transport sector and foreign tourists arriving by air In an interview earlier this summer with Travelweek, Air Canada’s Virgilio Russi, Managing Director of Sales, International, said that if Canada doesn’t reciprocate global entry privileges soon, countries may roll back their decision to allow Canadians in.

The travel industry is showing some signs of recovery. On Friday, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) saw 968,673 passengers travel through U.S. airport security checkpoints, the highest number since COVID-19 began to impact the travel industry in March. That number was followed by 935,308 traveling on Monday. Those follow four straight Sundays of 800,000-plus passengers, including the highest passenger numbers in the last six months.... The increase is good news for those looking for signs of recovery for the travel industrythe number is more than 10% higher than the previous high, 862,949 on Aug. 16though there is still a long way to go. Traffic is still down significantly year-over-year as the Friday before Labor Day last year saw 2.18 million passenger travel through TSA checkpoints in the U.S. Now, with some borders remaining closed (Americans are still barred from entry to European Union countries and the U.S.-Canada border remains closed) travel companies are looking at new policies and procedures to get people traveling again. Airlines and airports have continued pushing for COVID-19 testing in order to help mitigate the impact of COVID-19. That includes an IATA-led group that last month met with a United Nations task to push for COVID-19 testing requirements prior to travel instead of quarantines in order to help boost consumer desire to travel. Recently, U.S. Travel released a statement supporting the push from the U.S. airline industry to develop the program, explaining that we have long maintained that testing is the key to both safer travel and reopening the economy. U.S. airlines have also made the move to eliminate change feesAlaska, Delta Air Lines, American, and United all made the announcement last weekin order to give travelers some flexibility in an uncertain environment. TSA Hits Highest Passenger Numbers Since March Some destinations also continue to change the way they are welcoming tourists in order to ensure that inbound travelers remain confident they’ll stay safe and healthy during their journey. Costa Rica is only permitting U.S. travelers from States with lower COVID-19 transmission rates and the Bahamas recently added a COVID-19 negative test requirement for tourists.
