WHAT WE LEARNED FROM OUR FIRST GARDEN This year was the first time we planted a garden. We only had a rooftop space to work with so we made do With the crazy times, it took us longer to receive some of our portable garden packages, leaving us to plant well into June... We went a little seed happy!! Gardening is all about patience and planning Getting your seeds in after the threat of frost is over in May will allow you to harvest mid summer and replant for a second harvest at the end of September (Mabon!) We knew we wouldn’t have an opportunity to plant a second crop, so we poured in WAY more seeds that we should have This resulted in our cute, little beet harvest that we pulled yesterday We still consider this a win since @drewmarshalbg will be pickling them very soon and all the delicious greens will go into our salads this week! We know for next year to plant according to package directions with lots of space between them to allow for larger bulbs Trial and error is ALSO what gardening is about Making mistakes is how you learn!!! This is the first time we’ve ever planted a garden and this is what we have harvested so far Our beets are so tiny, we are calling them BEETLETS and will be pickled by the lovely @drewmarshalbg soon!!!!... (Pickling is a great way to preserve your produce, so that you can enjoy it all year round) We learned a very valuable lesson our first time planting a garden... DON’T PLANT TOO MANY SEEDS AT ONCE Because we didn’t get them into the ground until late June, we missed having a second planting window. We over-seeded to make sure something would grow and oh boy, did they ever. They are small yet mighty though Lettuce was our biggest success this year, so definitely get that going in your garden next year. It’s the crop that just keeps on giving Gardening is all about planning and patience. Get your seeds into the ground after the threat of frost is over and you will have an opportunity to harvest mid-summer and replant new seeds for a second harvest late September!!!! Celosia (in picture) This is a beautiful plant with vibrant, velvet-like flowers that you see a lot of this time of year. They are usually paired with sunflowers, globe amaranth and other wild flowers in beautiful bouquets. There a three main varieties of flowering celosia; Crested (look like brains), Plumed (look like brightly coloured, fluffy feathers) and Spiked (spiky flower heads that resemble heads of wheats). ... Celosia stems and leaves are actually EDIBLE and make a wonderful addition to stews and sauces. Celosias are NOT difficult plants to take care of. They prefer full sun, but can survive in partial sun, as long as, its a bright environment. Keep soil moist, but do NOT over water. They are pretty drought tolerant, so its of if you let it go dry by accident.
