We explored what was troubling Jesus' soul in the garden as he confronted the "social matrix driven by fear and enmity" (Thomas Merton's phrase from 'Passion for Peace') that was Jerusalem in those days and is our world today. Thanks for participating by viewing. We'd welcome any comments or questions.
On this last Sunday of Lent, we will explore what troubled Jesus' soul as he confronted the principalities and powers of his age in Jerusalem. Our text is John 12:20-33. You can join us in our Zoom sanctuary at 10am Pacific at this link - https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89470779927. These two guys are our music directors - Dan Reynolds on the left and Ben MacRae on the right. Their music really enriches our worshiping.
Regularity in posting our online jazz services has been distrupted during this pandemic, due totally to the irregularity of our minister, Brian Fraser. But we'...ve got some jazz in worship coming up for you over Holy Week, Good Friday, and into the post-Easter season. On Palm Sunday evening at 7pm in our Zoom sanctuary, we'll do an online version of our Merton & Jazz service. On the Wed of Holy Week, we'll post our recording of the Miles Black Trio doing Oscar Peterson's Easter Suite, with Rick Reynolds reading the Easter story, then for the 40 days following Easter, up to Ascension, we'll post a song of freedom each day with a short reflection and question to provoke your considerations of what we do with the gift of Easter. Thanks for you patience and continuing participation. Blessings from all of us at Brentwood. Here's the link for the Palm Sunday evening service - https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85169749601. Our Good Friday service will be at 10am in our Zoom sanctuary and feature readings from Jamaican poet Mervyn Morris and a soulful singing of selected verses of 'Lord of the Dance.' Here's the link for that service - https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81596258282. See more
As part of our missional musicking at Brentwood, we have established a tradition of doing a reflective service on Palm Sunday evening at 7pm Pacific featuring the poetry of Thomas Merton, some jazz because it was his favourite music, and ponderings on meanings generated by this mix. Last year, in the early days of the pandemic, we canceled it. This year, in our Zoom sanctuary, we're resuming the tradition. Lynn Szabo, a Merton scholar who got us going with this four years ...ago, is not able to be with us this year. But her brother, Gerry Teichrob and his jazz group, Quintessential Jazz, will be. Gerry and I will read some of the poems collected by Lynn, Quintessential Jazz will play behind our readings, and we'll explore questions that are raised as we wait in the dark before the dawn. Love to have you join us live. We'll also be posting the recording after the service. Here's the link - https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85169749601. See more
The Trinity worshiped us into the light this morning at Brentwood. We're honoured to have you vieiwng and trust the divine Presence will use our gathering to bless you.
Considering Paul's conviction that we are blessings together, by God's grace in Christ through the work of the Spirit, and ordaining 3 new ruling elders.
Remembering Paul's encouragement to love in Jesus Christ.
2/3rds through the second Sacred Jazz Suite from Brentwood. This one is called the Triunity Suite and was composed by Ben MacRae. Ben is on flute, reeds and vocals. Dan Reynolds is on piano, Jen Kim on bass, and Tyler Murray on drums. So grateful that the Spirit is infusing our space at Brentwood with this kind of creative faith formation and expression. We'll have it up on our YouTube channel later this week.
Just starting to record the first of 6 Sacred Jazz Suites that Brentwood is doing over the next 6 months with funding from the Synod of British Columbia's Presbyterian Innovative Ministries program. This one is the Gospel Roots Suite. It's performed by Grand Slam, a trad jazz group led by Ben MacRae, who compiled and arranged it. Ben is one of our music directors here at Brentwood. Playing in Grand Slam are Alvin Brendan (guitar), Tyler Murray (drums), Aaron Lee (trombone), Kayden Gorden (trumpet), .Michael Wagler (bass), and Ben Macrae (reeds & vocals). Producing these sessions are Ken and Marvin from Burkeville Productions. Thanks to all who are making this project happen.
We will gather for our Good Friday service at 10AM on Mar 30. LJ Mounteney will be leading with voacls, backed by our director of music, Dan Reynolds. Rick Reynolds will be reading the Good Friday story and Brian Fraser will be reading devotional reflections. Your presence will greatly enrich our worship as we remember what God went through in Jesus to save the world.
Thanksgiving worshiping with Brentwood. Love to see your comments to expand the conversation. Thanks for viewing and richest blessings for this holiday weekend.
Celebrating Holy Communion on All Saints' Day and exploring how we can participate in the work of the Lord.
We're so honoured to be virtually hosting this benefit concert for the 9th year running. Glenda, Brett, and Miles will be in the sanctuary, along with the Burkeville Productions crew to live stream it to you and your bubble buddies. This will allow us to expand our reach into our e-neighbourhoods and have more than the 100 we can accommodate live at the concert. Please buy tickets and/or donate to Dixon in support of their work in supporting families who are fleeing from violence. Hope to see you online. https://dixonsociety.ca/9th-annual-virtual-christmas-jazz/

Lesson 105 (ACIM) - Millerd Ongoing Beauty- Reynolds Lesson 19 (ACIM) - Millerd Monk's Dream - Thelonious Monk... Here's the video of our first Devotional Jazz at Brentwood service. We'll be live streaming such services on the first Sunday of most months. For the next few, there will be no one other than the four of us and a couple of folks from Burkeville Productions in the sanctuary. Soon, hopefully, we'll add a live in-person congregation to the mix. But only when prudent. We pray this time of prayer will enhance your resilience as we negotiate this pandemic.

Holy Communion after considering Paul's stewarding of the mysteries of God.
This morning on our Zoom worshiping with Brentwood we explored the resilience that comes from God's faith, hope, and love as we adjust to this persistent pandemic. Thanks for participating by viewing. We pray we are as encouraging to you as you are to us.
Exploring the impact of God's faith, hope, and love that Paul dewcribes so powerfully in 1 Cor 13:1-13 in these pandemic times.
We explored some of the dynamics of the togetherness that the Trinity is generating so we can be communal ambassadors of God's forgiving and reconciling love for all the world. Thanks for viewing. Keep us in your prayers as we consider new dreams and schemes for expanding our embrace through Brentwood.
Considering the kind of togetherness Jesus Christ generates
Here's this morning's service of worshiping with Brentwood. We explored Paul's understanding of how we serve the common good as the body of Jesus Christ. Thanks for viewing, sharing, and commenting. It all expands the conversations generated at Brentwood about being ambassadors of God's forgiving and reconciling love for our world.
We were exploring Paul's ideas about serving the common good as diverse parts of the body of Jesus Christ.
Not only have we been adding to our catalogue of 'Curious About Church' weekly podcasts, but Ben has been setting up all the necessary subscriptions and links to offer the podcast on all the major platforms. Here's the link to them, with episode #14 added, dealing with perspectives on a Christian understanding of creation. Love to see you comments as part of this ongoing conversation. https://linktr.ee/BrentwoodPCAdmin
