Brewbakers would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to our Premier, Blaine Hiiggs, the Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Jennifer Russell and the countless frontline workers who continue to ensure that New Brunswick perseveres through Covid-19 - from grocery store workers to nursing home staff, nurses and doctors to Canada Post staff, UPS and Fed Ex drivers. We value you. With that said ...- we are now open for business - in a limited way. We have a Covid-19 work plan and have instituted a variety of protocols to keep our customers and staff safe. Effective today, our hours of operation are 4-10 pm Tuesday-Friday, Noon - 10 pm Saturday and Sunday 4 - 9 pm. Our patio is ready to go and we look forward to seeing our customers and friends - both new and old! New Brunswickers are a resilient lot to begin with. Chef Michael Smith hits the nail on the head. For context, consider this. In the calendar year 2019, Brewbakers in Downtown Fredericton had Total Revenue of $2,071,744. More than 1/4 of this revenue goes directly into the Government Treasury. Specifically, we made the following actual expenditures directly to the Provincial and Federal Governments: HST collected and remitted - $335,024... NB Power - $73,488 NB Liquor - $193,563 Property Tax - $43,108 TOTAL - $645,183 Furthermore we paid $1,019,253 in salaries and wages to our dedicated staff - who earned every penny of it.(Management takes no salary or dividends from the company - this is ALL payment to staff.) Each month we are closed, we have $75,981 in fixed expenses which must be paid - which means every month with $0 revenue we lose $75,981. This is real money. That must come from somewhere. This figure is comprised of mortgage payments, power bills, property tax, telephone, security system, insurance, etc. Our insurance company, the entire insurance industry actually, which is regulated by government, is declining requests to honour business interruption insurance. With all respect to our legislators, $40,000 does not do much to assist. Top that off with the fact that it is a loan - which must be repaid. Further, it actually hasn't even been received yet - and we are exactly one month from the date we ceased operations. As a business who contributed $645,183 directly back to our Governments, we respectfully feel that they should be more responsive, if not genuinely empathetic, to our needs at this time. We feel this is especially so, as our business, and our entire industry is closed as a result of government order for public safety. The hospitality industry is drowning - PLEASE - throw us a line. Refund our HST so we can stay alive and continue to employ our staff, buy inventory from local suppliers, and keep sending huge remittances of HST back into government coffers. Pretty please. The staff at Brewbakers miss the pleasure of serving our community and guests. These past weeks have been challenging for us all. We truly hope we survive to see you all again. But to do so, we, and your other favourite local establishments need help. We need our business interruption insurance honoured. We need relief on our mortgages, rents, property taxes, electricity bills and other fixed expenses which remain due each month that we have no revenue. As Todd Perrin of Mallard Cottage has aptly said: "This pandemic has reduced the culture of the restaurant business to math. Without service, social contact, the intimacy of food - the restaurant is just an equation. Math sucks generally and restaurant math is broken. It's the people that allow restaurants to persist - not the math. We knew - now everybody knows."

Temporary Closure Brewbakers Following the direction of Government of New Brunswick on March 16, 2020, Brewbakers will be closed until further notice. The past weeks have been a blur as developments have occurred so quickly, and closer and closer to home, with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic.... Knowing what we know, and having the health and safety of our staff, customers and the entire community as our primary concern, there really is no other choice than to temporarily cease operations. We are encouraged by the language being used by both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Blaine Higgs with respect to their understanding of the havoc this situation is creating in the lives of our employees, customers and the entire country. Brewbakers is a family, and when even one of us is in distress, we all share that burden. We will remain in steady contact and support of our employees in this difficult time. We trust that these measures by our Government agencies will have the desired effect in reducing the spread of this pandemic.
