Counter a grown-up day at your desk with a minute in child’s pose. Not only will it help you loosen tight lower back muscles, but it also promotes spinal flexibility and overall blood circulation. Simply start with your hands and knees on the ground, and gently sink back through your hips, coming to rest on your heels. Walk your hands out to a position that feels comfy and take a few deep breaths. Ahhh.

We have some exciting news coming your way soon! Here is a sneak peek from our Kinesiologist Colby to get you motivated Supine Bridge Basic Lie flat on your back, with your feet resting on a Swiss ball, and your arms by your side (palms face down). Squeeze your bottom muscles and lift your back upwards. Make sure you maintain good posture (do not over-arch your lower back) and contract the deep abdominal muscles by squeezing your tummy towards your spine.... To make the exercise easier, move the ball towards your body (ie. more under your legs), and to make it harder, move the ball away from your body (ie. more under your heels). This exercise helps to strengthen the abdominal, lower back, gluteal and hamstring muscles!

The radial shockwaves helps stimulate healing reactions by increasing blood flow and increasing the growth of new cells in the body. It also provides pain relief by allowing the body to regenerate more healthy tissue through a cascade of cellular events.... The most successfully treated conditions are: - Calcific tendonitis of the shoulder - Frozen shoulder - Golfer’s or Tennis elbow) - Plantar fasciitis/ heel spurs - Deep back pain - Bursitis - Achilles tendinopathy Contact us to book an appointment today --> https://bit.ly/3kufGd2

Wintertime is considerably harder on the average person. Not only is the weather colder but there are also slippery conditions right outside your front door, making it a challenge to get out of the house. At Brickyard, we don’t believe that winter should hold you back from going out and staying active. Staying safe when walking outside means choosing the right footwear. Before you step out, you need to put your best foot forward! We recommend the local running shoe shop @fr...ontrunnersnanaimo . They carry a variety of running, walking and hiking options to keep you safe and active throughout the cold season! As a general rule, smaller movements that keep your centre of balance are the way to go. To do this, make sure your feet are shoulder-width apart to help provide a solid base for movement. As with any walking movements, be sure to bend your knees and keep the body as loose as possible. Some people also choose to shuffle instead of walk, which also helps with keeping stability and footing. Shuffling should also be made in small movements. Others find that assistance from walking poles, or a cane with a retractable ice pick, helps them to keep their balance. With these physiotherapy and wellness tips in mind, we hope you can get outside and stay active this winter. Although taking precautions should minimize injuries and health problems during the Winter, injuries can still occur. For any winter injuries or other conditions, please don’t hesitate to contact Brickyard! --->https://bit.ly/3kufGd2

Did you know Shane, one of our physiotherapists', commutes to work every day on his bike? Here are some tips from Shane for winter commuting on your bike! 1. Dress in layers: breathable, waterproof outer layers are the key to staying dry! 2. Lights and reflective clothing: It gets dark out earlier, so lights and reflective vests are a must to stay safe.... 3. Consider an alternative route: Instead of cycling on your main summer route, maybe take roads that are less busy. 4. Keep up to date on your bike maintenance, harsher winter weather can be hard on your bike. 5. Be realistic: there's no need to be a masochist about the whole thing. You don't have to ride every day!

It has long been known that there are many inherent health benefits from a regular routine of exercise walking. Walking strengthens muscles in the feet, legs, hips, and torso. It increases the stability of the spine and conditions the muscles that keep the body in the upright position as well as nourishes the spinal structures. Walking facilitates strong circulation, pumping nutrients into soft tissues and draining toxins. It also improves flexibility and posture! We know it can get more challenging to walk outside as days get shorter and the weather worse. For all the listed benefits and MORE, we encourage you to keep walking!

A common injury of the knee is a tearing of the ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament). This ligament is very important for the stability of the knee and often needs to be repaired surgically. The primary function of the ACL is to keep the bottom surface of the knee joint from sliding forwards during movement. An unrepaired knee may feel unstable or give way suddenly. Not all ACL injuries require surgery and some may heal well with proper rehabilitation, however for those who do ne...ed surgery, there is a significant rehabilitation period afterwards. The path to full rehabilitation from a knee reconstruction can be a long and bumpy one, however, there are high success rates with this surgery, particularly when followed up with full physiotherapy rehabilitation. Could You Benefit from IMS? IMS is perfect for those nagging aches that just don’t seem to go away, even when the injury that originally caused them is no longer there. Some clues that you may be experiencing muscle shortening or over-sensitive nerves include: - Stiffness and a decreased range of movement... - Shortened muscles with tender trigger points - A feeling of heat and burning in the area - Deep aches - Occasional short, sharp bursts of pain - Extreme sensitivity to touch One of our experienced IMS trained physiotherapists will be able to examine you thoroughly and determine exactly what is behind your chronic pain. By targeting several muscles at once, and over the course of a few sessions, the pain signals can be switched off and the muscles given the chance to release and return to normal. One of the reasons why posture is so important is that the body has an ideal alignment for almost every joint that provides the most stability and efficiency for movement in that position. This is particularly true for the spine, which has a large number of joints that work together to provide movement, stability and support for the body. The spine must also provide a stable base for the shoulder and head. When the spine is in its optimum position, this also allows for free m...ovement of the nerves that supply the trunk, arms and legs. While the human body is highly adaptable and will continue to function when a posture is not ideal, a lot of energy is wasted and undue stress is placed on the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the body. Over time this can cause pain, tightness and loss of flexibility. Speak to your physiotherapist for practical tips on how to improve your posture throughout the day.
