Volunteers needed! It's that time of year again! It is time to step up as a member and support your RCL branch by volunteering with the poppy campaign as we pledged to do when joining. Come to the branch and sign up on the board to fill a position at the poppy campaign table at the mall.... The autumn weather is slowly setting in, and the Remembrance period is here. It’s an important time to stop and think about the sacrifices Canada’s Veterans have made for us, and continue to give back throughout the coming year by volunteering for the Poppy Campaign, serving on committees, or other activities at your local Branch. More Branches are opening their doors again every day after the pandemic, and need your support.

2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the symbolic Poppy. This symbol of Remembrance was first adopted by then what would become the Canadian Legion in 1925. The ...Royal Canadian Legion has produced a pin for this Poppy Campaign year reminiscent of the first Poppies distributed in Canada after WW1. Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 24 in Bridgewater hosted a brunch for WW2 veterans from the Veterans unit in Lunenburg on October 19 2021. During this celebration these poppy pins were presented to the veterans who were able to attend. One of those in attendance was Joyce Townsend who will turn 99 in January 2022. Joyce served with Women’s Auxiliary Air Force and was responsible for maintaining the barrage balloons that flew over the city of Edinburgh, Scotland. Joyce remembers those times well and said they were told that they had to be careful about speaking to any strangers. She did speak with a special sailor in the RCN and would eventually become a war bride. Joyce was very pleased to receive her Poppy pin from Legion Past President Wayne Thorburne and Branch Service Office Susan Stark. See more
