_Article Up_ COMPETITION/ Village Coffee . Viennese coffee houses symbolized the citys public living room, acting as an informal gathering space for conversation and contemplation. This proposal for The Brewed, designed by 3B students Dani Grabke and Chris Qiu, modernizes the coffee house by retaining its role as a gathering space while nesting programs that promote local innovation. .... Village Coffee splits the typical caf into six different houses. Each offers various programmatic uses and creates the condition for different interactions, giving the user a sense of agency in their environment. Visitors enter the space through glass canopies that flank the edges of each house. A continuous skylight connects the human to nature while providing shelter from the elements. This organization of spaces ensures there is a place of comfort and familiarity for people of all walks of life. Thus, the houses become an extension of home, and customers can enjoy a cup of coffee in complete comfort. . Read more! http://waterlooarchitecture.com//competition-village-coff/ See more

_Article Up_ COMPETITION/ RE: Forest 2020 . This proposal for EVOLOs 2020 skyscraper competition was designed by 3A students Chi Un Lee and Annie Wang. As the palm oil industry struggles to meet zero carbon emission and deforestation targets without halting economic activity, RE: Forest 2020 suggests a solution. The skyscraper acts as an artificial lung that harvests forests and captures carbon dioxide, while maintaining Indonesias palm oil industry. .... Since the mid-20th century, substantial logging from plantation industries have exponentially reduced the rain forests. Indonesias rain forests are now one of the fastest disappearing rain forests in the world. In 2012, Indonesias rate of deforestation surpassed that of the Amazon, the most well-known rain forest in the world. This investigation begins in Sumatra, one of the regions most affected by deforestation due to the palm oil industry. . Read more! http://waterlooarchitecture.com//competitions-re-forest-2/ See more

_Article Up_ COMPETITION / Lagos: City of Water . With much of its territory lying only metres above sea level, Lagos is a city with a complex relationship with the waters that rise to meet it. Here, the ocean is a source of food and a dumping ground for waste, a mode for transportation and an eroding force washing away at the land. Finalists Christa Hu and Sparsh Gandhi designed A House to Fish in, a response that aims to build on the existing vernacular of Makoko communit...y to address issues of food security, climate resiliency, and urban legitimacy. . Today, our world is acutely aware of each passing year counting down to the arrival of an unimaginable world, permanently reshaped by the forces of climate change such as rising sea levels. Globally, large swathes of coastal cities home to millions of people are at risk of disappearing below the waves within our lifetimes. _Article Up_ COMPETITION/ The Design House . Helsinki is an international city built on an intimate scale. Through harsh winters and heavy monsoons, Helsinki has become a city of interiors. _Article Up_ TL+GS/ Sidewalk Chalk: A Recipe for Reform . On Tuesday, July 14th, 2020, students chalked a call to action on the sidewalks surrounding the University of Waterloo School of Architecture (UWSA) in Galt. We, the Collective Resistancean intersection between The Sustainability Collective and Treaty Lands, Global Storiesare calling on the university to Break the Canon. .... In response to the Western worldview reinforced in our curriculum, we call on UWSA to confront the canon through which we are taught to think as architects. We insist on an inclusive curriculum that reflects diverse perspectives. We require a radical rethinking of the white, cis-hetero-patriarchical power structures that our School serves to reinforce. We demand an end to institutionalized inequity in our own community, schools across Canada, and the greater architectural profession. . In context of the uprising Black Lives Matter movement, the ongoing climate crisis, and the shift to online learning, we see these crises as a critical opportunity to reflect on the curriculum and implement foundational change. Although we remain physically distanced, we continue to believe in the power of visibility in public space. We hope those in favour will implement this recipe to call their own communities, neighbourhoods, and institutions into action. . We ask faculty at the University of Waterloo who are teaching in the fall to reflect on the following: How will you break the canon of your upcoming course? Do you believe this work is important, why or why not? How will you address the financial barriers of your course that disproportionately affect marginalized students? How will you ensure your style/method of teaching is as accessible as possible? . http://waterlooarchitecture.com//2020/07/30/sidewalk-chalk/ See more

_Symposium_ COLUMNS AND CAPITAL Join us online tomorrow, July 14th at 10am - 12pm and 1pm to 3pm Architecture is capital intensive. Yet conventional architectural education provides little exposure to the economic realities of design practice and real estate development. Students graduate without the entrepreneurial agility needed to advocate for architectural design in the market-driven field of building places for people to live. Join us in the Columns and Capital Symposium... for two panel discussions about navigating the world of economics that lies between architectural design and real estate development. Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84518921479 The morning discussion with Michael Leckie (Leckie Studio), John van Nostrand (Parcel Development), and John McMinn (UWSA) is about architects taking on the role of developers. The afternoon panel with Peter Clewes (architectsAlliance), John Filipetti (Oxford Properties) and Larry Smith (UW, School of Economics) is about the impact of macro-economic forces on architecture and real-estate development.

_Article Up_ A Message from Treaty Lands + Global Stories: From its inception, Treaty Lands + Global Stories has been about decolonizing our curriculum and centering BIPOC voices. We stand with the Black Lives Matter movement and share the pain of the black community as they grieve the loss of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others. We also stand with the Indigenous community as they grieve the missing and murdered members of their communities, whos...e deaths also result from colonial violence. We have always worked to become anti-racist, more intersectional, and better allies for marginalized groups. We will continue to do that work. We support calls for changing the roles of institutions such as law enforcement that, among others, perpetuate systemic racism. We would also like to acknowledge that it is Pride Month. Colonialism has contributed to the marginalization of LGBTQ2 communities. Furthermore, the work of Black, Queer activists such as Martha P. Johnson has played a huge role in in the gay liberation movement, and we should celebrate their work during this time. Now is the time to educate ourselves on the issues that affect BIPOC communities. Now is the time to look at how we as designers and as a School can support the work of BIPOC designers. Now is the time to look at the link between climate change and colonialism. We must seize this moment.Although Treaty Lands + Global Stories has not been active the past term, we will be revitalizing, becoming more intersectional and expanding our reach within the School this term. We hope that you will all join us in this important work. Treaty Lands + Global Stories

_Article Up_ RESOURCES/ Diversity in Architecture In the past few weeks, weve witnessed the horrific discrimination, violence and racism against the black community. These issues have been prevalent for a large component of our history. The tremendous uproar in regards to George Floyds death strikes a chord with many people as we confront the reality that even in 2020, we continue to marginalize people of color. In the architecture community, our involvement and activism i...s important in setting the stage for inclusive design. In the postcolonial world, architecture and urbanism continues to enforce political control and marginalize people of colour. One example is Pruitt-Igoe, a public housing complex located in St. Louis, Missouri in the 1950s. At the time, public housing was used as a segregation tool. Projects were labelled white or black. We can begin to disentangle these narratives by taking control of the conversation. And to engage in the conversation, we must understand the history and the context of the topic that we wish to speak about. BRIDGE has gathered an open source list of resources with the help of Waterloo Architecture students and professors. Special thanks to Simone Delaney, Nicole Chen, Danielle Grabke and Tara Bissett for their contributions. If youve encountered a thought-provoking, conversation-inducing resource, please submit an entry to the google form (link in article) with a short description of the content. Together, let us interject the conversation and become game-changers in our field of design. Read more! _Article Up_ STUDENT WORK/ 3A Studio Part 2 . Waterloos 3A studio is an opportunity to explore the relationship between architecture and the city. The 2020 studioOur House is on Fire focuses on the intersection between two contemporary crises: the climate emergency and Torontos housing emergency. The challenge of the studio was to design a series of deeply affordable apartment buildings that integrate public programs at grade acting as a network of support for the low-i...ncome residents. Part 2 of this series focuses on Social Relations. "Our House is on Fire" proposes housing as a right. Students designed their buildings with three qualities in mind: generosity, flexibility and sovereignty. The following projects are examples of these qualities at three different scales: the broader neighbourhood, the public and common spaces on the site, and the private units within it. . Article Up A Letter From ON EMPATHY . As we are amidst a moment unlike any we have experienced in our lifetime, it is so important to remember the incredible community to which we belong.... Seeing the deep collective anxiety that we face, largely due to the feeling of uncertainty, it is important to recognize our humanity, and to acknowledge all that we are grateful for. As a way to start, here are a few moments that brought us together as a community over the last six years. We are not able to come together in person, but we can certainly continue to foster this spirit of community and learning that we have felt and come to know. Although we are all isolated, we have an incredible resource: our network of students, alumni, staff, and faculty. . Read more! http://waterlooarchitecture.com//26/a-letter-from-on-empa/

SPRING into a new project with us! Guided by BRIDGE Centre for Architecture + Design and Cambridge Art Galleries | Idea Exchange, Land Marks is a community collaborative project that challenges us to consider our relationship with the land we live on through the marks we inscribe upon it. These inscriptions narrate a history of contradictions: relationships of stewardship and exploitation, place making and alienation, inhabitation and dispossession. Across Cambridge, through the 5 local library locations (Preston, Hespeler, Queens Square, the Old Post Office, and Clemens Mill), this project will prompt us to consider the destructive and regenerative processes implicit in our land marks.
