Bridge to Registration and Employment in Mental Health 22.10.2021

Aspiring Psychotherapists and BREM students Nidhi Gandhi and Kanwaljit Kaur talk about their placement at St. Michael's Homes in their words: We are proud to be a part of SMH as they run one of the largest free Psychotherapy programs in Ontario. We are also thankful to BREM and our Supervisor David Bruce for giving us this privilege amidst these difficult times. This placement experience at St. Michael’s Homes allows us the opportunity to learn and practice trauma-focused approaches and modalities with clients. With this new and valuable learning experience, we will be able to transfer these skills to our practice ahead. #BREM #cdnimm #newtocanada #MentalHealthisHealth #immigrants #mnlct

BREM participant Mona (Mahrukh) Ammad is completing her student placement at a private practice Anya Malda - Soulful Balance Counselling and Therapy. In her words: "I feel super excited today to be sharing my journey with you all. It seems like yesterday that I discovered BREM and all that it had to offer. I am, currently completing my internship as the last leg of my course work from BREM, at Soulful Balance Counselling and Therapy. Soulful Balance specializes in therapy a...nd support for perinatal mental health issues, pregnancy loss, infertility issues, depression, anxiety in addition to other mental health issues. My responsibilities include, but are not limited to, conducting intake interviews, one on one therapy sessions, assessments, observations, providing support, identifying and setting up goals in collaboration with clients, while implementing a holistic, client centered, and non-judgmental approach to improve their mental health and general well-being, so they can reach their best quality of life. I feel immensely grateful for having a highly knowledgeable, experienced and empathic supervisor. Being a mental health professional and a mother myself, I recognize the immense importance of mental health support for women in this phase of their lives and realize that it is something that’s often easily neglected. My placement is not only providing me with the opportunity to demonstrate my skills, directly adding to my experience, but is also helping to expand my knowledge through providing me with opportunities to attend various workshops, consequently enhancing my confidence in working in the mental health field in Ontario. I remain indebted to BREM for the personalized guidance and support throughout the whole process!" #MentalHealthIsHealth #cdnimm #MNLCT #immigrantstory #BREM See more

BREM participant Nkeonye Judith Izuka is completing her student placement at Philip Aziz Centre / Emily's House for Hospice Care. In her words: "My primary role is spending time each week offering psychosocial support in the community to adults at end of life. This role has helped me put life in perspective repeatedly while sitting with them, sharing with them, actively listening to them, their aspirations, their present and past joys, their sorrows. Being a companion is an e...nriching experience for us both. When the need for pandemic restrictions surfaced, that support was then provided virtually through audio and video calls. Even though this is not as enriching as being physically present, my clients would rather have that than nothing at all." #MentalHealthIsHealth #community #BREM #MNLCT

Two current BREM students, Agreema and Manjinder are engaged in a placement with the Chatham Kent Family Health Team (CKFHT). The two of us feel immense gratification being able to touch people’s lives for good. This placement provides an invaluable kickstart to our careers in Canada, all thanks to the BREM team. The placement with CKFHT is a little different than usual as it involves the development of a wellness program for their team of frontline workers helping people during the pandemic. The placement is providing a great exposure to understand mental health in Ontario and allowing the research bug inside us to flourish.
