Welcome back to Pet Hazard Fridays Today's pet hazard is Ethylene Glycol. Ethylene glycol is a highly toxic substance that can be found in a variety of household products. There are the common sources, such as automotive antifreeze, but did you know Ethylene glycol (EG) can also be found in some snow globes & eye masks!... Pets can find EG to be sweet but it can be fatal if ingested. When it is metabolized (broken down) by the body, it can cause severe, acute kidney failure and cause calcium oxalate crystals to form in the kidneys. There are three stages seen with EG poisoning. Stage 1: Occurs within 30 min to 12 hours. Signs & symptoms are similar (but not limited to) to alcohol poisoning (drooling, vomiting, seizures, excessive thirst, walking "drunk") Stage 2: Occurs 12-24 hours after ingestion. Signs of "alcohol" poisoning appear to resolve. THE PET IS NOT BETTER! Underlying organ damage is occurring. Stage 3: Can occur 12-24 hours after ingestion for cats and 36-72 hours for dog. Severe kidney failure is occurring. Symptoms are severe lethargy, coma, vomiting, seizures, inappetance, and more. This can be fatal if not treated immediately. If you believe your pet has ingested Ethylene glycol, it is important to seek veterinary care immediately.
