Does your child always have a messy backpack (or desk, or closet, or room, or locker)? One strategy that can help children (and adults) stay organized is by creating a visual 'map'. Swipe right to see an example of a Backpack Map. Here's how it works:... 1 - empty backpack of all the contents 2 - categorize (thank you @thehomeedit for that word!) items in the backpack including a pile for garbage and 'to be filed'. Categories may include electronics, writing utensils, books/binders, etc. 3 - select a 'home' for each category. We suggest having a pocket folder for loose papers that need to be signed, filed, or sorted into binders. 4 - draw or take a picture of your backpack and label each compartment with what 'lives' there (use visuals for younger children rather than words) 5 - Post your map somewhere easily visible and set days/times for backpack organization. Use a timer or play a favourite song during organization time. This backpack map also includes positive statements that a child could be encouraged to use when feeling overwhelmed by their messy backpack. Let us know if you try out the Backpack Map (or desk map or room map) and tag us if you do! If your child needs help with organizing their belonging or their homework, tests, and assignments, check out our executive functions coaching to find out how we can help! (#linkinbio) See more
