On this day 80 years ago (4 November 1939) Maria Montessori and Mario Montessori arrived at Adyar, India, having flown from Naples to Madras, where they had bee...n received at the world headquarters of the Theosophical Society. Their coming to Adyar was a colourful occasion; the children of Theosophical schools lined the avenue from the entrance gate of the estate to what was to be her residence for much longer than she expected. On the very day of her arrival at Adyar, Montessori gave a press conference in which she expressed her happiness at the fulfilment of a long wished visit to India where she expected to receive more from this ancient land than she is able to give". #montessori150 #montessori

The goal with saying the word no less frequently is to redirect your toddler toward what you want them to do. And before we go on we completely understand th...at this is WAY HARDER to say than do. Our hope is that we can all remember this information during some of the many times we feel the word no about to come out! HERES WHY: - The word no, if used too often, can make your toddler tune out, and then the word loses its meaning. Its not too late even if you feel like the word has already lost its meaning in your home! - Research shows that even as adults, we only listen to parts of sentences. And this is particularly true for toddlers. Describing the behavior you DO want to see allows you to avoid reinforcing what you dont want them to do. - When you say careful dont spill that! you are actually putting the thought into your toddlers mind that they can spill their drink. Instead, you could say something like, thank you for using two hands to keep the milk in your cup. - Speaking in the positive allows your toddler to strengthen their problem-solving and develop critical thinking skills. Instead of hearing what they cant do, theyre able to focus on all of the possibilities of what they can do. SO, HOW CAN WE APPLY THIS AT HOME? - As much as you can, show your toddler what you want them to do instead. Heres how to give gentle touches (instead of pulling your pets tail ) or heres how to stack the blocks (instead of throwing them). - Explaining why something isnt okay helps your toddler learn over time to make better choices. For example, you can say this: when we take our shoes off as we enter the house, it helps keep the floors clean. - Redirect and talk about what you want your toddler to do by saying, lets see if we can find a better way to do that. - In an emergency, a passionate NO! can be just the right thing. Also consider trying words like STOP! or STAY THERE! What are your go-to phrases or words to help redirect your toddler? See more

Its a funny old world, isnt it? For thousands of years, humans lived, worked, played and learned in groups of various ages. A child was just as likely to spen...d time with his grandmother, as he was to be in the company of a younger child. What was odd, was finding anyone spending most of their time exclusively with their peer age group. And then, the modern education system, being wise and efficient, sorted children into classrooms based on age. This way all 9-year-olds could learn at a 9-year-olds level. Only, not all 9-year-olds learn at the same pace. Some might be better suited with the seven-year-olds in maths or the 13-year-olds in English. Some may still want to play imaginary games at recess, while others have grown too mature for such trivialities. This classroom thinking has leaked into every area of our lives. The idea that children should only play with others of their own age, is a very recent one. When viewed through a different lense it seems odd. Consider that after reaching adulthood our friends begin to spread out over a variety of ages. One of my greatest joys is seeing the different ages at our Wild+Free outings playing together. Big teens helping toddlers cross creeks, small people having a voice even with the older children. There is no hierarchy, just children playing. The older children show the little ones how to construct lean-to forts. The smaller children point out mushrooms and insects and everyone oohs and ahhs. They are an organic community. Similar interests unite them into friendships, not age brackets. The benefits for all are wonderful. Older kids have the freedom to tarry in childhood a bit longer. Younger kids have a wise companion to help and teach them. Older children benefit from the responsibilities of leadership and nurturing. Young ones benefit from the attention and care of the big kids. What a beautiful childhood for all. . . . . : Wherever he said, Come, I stepped in faith by Honor C Appleton 1879-1951 #homeschoollife #homeschoolhumor #momlife #homeschoolmeme #homeschoolsnark #homeschool #wildandfreechildren #charlottemason #classicalconversations #mommemes #momsnark #classicalartmeme See more

"Discipline was never meant to be about punishment. It comes from the word disciple, as in to teach, not to punish. Teaching our children the lessons that... matter will only happen when they are in a brain state which is consistent with feeling safe. For them to be open to rational information, ask questions, reflect on their behaviour, and think about a better way to do things, the prefrontal cortex needs to be on board. This will only happen when they are feeling calm, safe, and connected to a trusted adult." See more

Are your family and friends onboard with Montessori? When I was just getting started with Montessori I had a friend who was and still is a traditional school te...acher. She is absolutely lovely and I still love her to this day buttttttt she was not a fan of Montessori. She would tell me all the time that she didnt believe in it and that I shouldnt get started with it. I politely thanked her and went on practicing Montessori in our home. Fast forward 2 years later and my daughter is 2.5 years old. My friend is over for a visit and gets to witness my daughter making her own breakfast. My friend, of course, is completely shocked. She kept going on about how kids in her class dont even make their own lunches let alone a toddler! I guess the point is you cant win everyone over, sometimes these things just work themselves out. Looking back, I wish I had talked to her a bit more and defended my choices but I didnt really know what to say. If you have some well-meaning family or friends that you want to talk to I have the perfect resource for you!
