Here comes the honey

Have you ever seen a honey bee egg before? Last week while cleaning up some rogue comb our bees had built in the hive, I brought this chunk inside, planning to melt it down. Today, while looking at it, I saw the cells were full of eggs! This comb came from one of our hives with an amazingly productive queen. So productive, that she lays everywhere she can , including off the frame in the excess comb. So, if you look into each individual wax cell, you can see something similar to a grain of rice..... that’s the eggs. However they are much smaller than rice. They’re not much bigger than a couple grains of sand.

Rock spent her day sitting in front of the bee yard today toying with all the bees she could. She’s lucky they’re not in honey mode yet

So happy to see all the bees that survived the winter so far they were loving the chance to escape the hive today.

There are 20,000 species of bees on earth and only a small fraction of them make honey. The species of honey bee used for commercial beekeeping is known as Apis mellifera. It’s one of only seven known honey bee species.
