Today’s appraisal story~Service ware from the 1800’s, gold dipped. You can see that the gold has warn away in areas. A client brought these in for appraisal. We were surprised to find that although these spoons matched in design, only one carried the makers mark, which indicates that this may not be the original set. However they are of great quality, in excellent condition given their age. We have appraised the value at $500! A surprise to the owners who had inherited them

More Trench Art- Excerpt from an original article in the Harold & Review. "Lynnita Brown, director of the Douglas County Museum in Tuscola, said war is a complex animal that gnaws at human emotions ranging from rage to pity. She said that's why her museum tries to stage exhibits that show visitors, especially children, that battles are fought by human beings whose emotional breadth goes beyond gung-ho two-dimensional Hollywood heroes.... And in between the terror, rage and pity are often long periods of boredom and the aching need to fill it, hence the creative onslaught of trench art, which takes its name from the trenches of World War I. "It's an art form that is about the downtime between combat, but it also incorporates combat because those empty artillery shells and things wouldn't exist if it wasn't for combat," said Brown. "So when you look at a piece of trench art you can't just say 'Well, that's an ashtray,' because it is far more than that. It's symbolic of many aspects of war and the soldiers who fight it. There is a lot of trench art out there buried in people's closets, and it really shouldn't be; it should be brought out and shown so the public can appreciate it and understand." ~Remembrance~ In contemplation of Remembrance lets take a look at Trench Art: what it is, and what the art form tells us about the human need to create, even in a state of war. "Trench Art is any decorative item made by soldiers, prisoners of war, or civilians where the manufacture is directly linked to armed conflict or its consequences. It offers an insight not only to their feelings and emotions about the war, but also their surroundings and the materials they had availab...le to them." In this image on the left you will see a lighter ingeniously fashioned from a bullet casing. This is a common example of this art-form. I encourage you to brows the web and find other examples Trench Art. The tools used to make these works were as limited as the materials, but the creativity of the human spirit was limitless.
