Russ Shepard was introduced to lacrosse in Saskatchewan through master coach Al Luciuk. He played some senior men's lacrosse and began coaching youth in 1995. ...He moved to Nunavut as a teacher in 1998 and began the Kugluktuk Grizzlies lacrosse program in 1999. Soon after, he formed Nunavut Lacrosse. The journey of his program and the amazing impact the game had on the disenfranchised youth of the region has been captured in the recent release of the full-length motion picture "The Grizzlies." This Lacrosse Talk tells the story behind the initiative and the movie and will be of great interest to all who love this game. His involvement with the game did not end with the Grizzlies. It brings great sadness to announce that the community of Nanaimo and our lacrosse family has lost a legend. Kyle Noble passed peacefully this morning surrounde...d by his family. If you had attended a Sr.B Timbermen game over the last 20 years, you know who he was. He started out with the team in around the year 2000, a 12-year-old kid who used to write letters to the players telling them how much they meant to him. He never missed a home game and as he got older, he never missed an away game traveling with the team to almost every game. He even traveled with the team to the 2014 & 2015 Presidents Cups in Coquitlam and St.Catherines and was there for every minute of the 2018 Nanaimo tournament. Before games, Kyle would enter the dressing room and read out words of encouragement, something no player over the last 20 years will ever forget. And if we weren't playing well he let us know it, we would get an earful in between periods. Kyle's passion for the game and team even got him kicked out of a few games, lol. Fortunately, many past and current players were able to visit Kyle in hospital last week, and hopefully, we were able to show him and his family what he meant to us. Our condolences go out to Kyle's extended family and especially his Dad, Randy, who was always by his side. As one player noted.....He'll forever be giving us a "Hey Boyzzz" from above. What a legend.

LOCAL SPORT CLUBS IN B.C. CAN NOW APPLY FOR RELIEF FUNDING VIASPORT Organizations in the B.C. sport community have felt the effects of COVID-19, including lost revenue for non-profit sport organizations, threatening their ability to offer community sport activities.... Our current estimate is that 79 per cent of the 4,100+ local sport organizations across B.C. are at risk of insolvency. Without support for local clubs, many communities will see reduced access to sport, which could take up to two years to rebuild. British Columbians have and will be profoundly affected, as sport and physical activity is an important part of our collective wellness. To make sure everyone has opportunities to participate in and enjoy the benefits of sport, local sport organizations can now apply for relief funding offered by the Province of B.C. totaling $1.5 million. This funding is designed to provide short-term relief in order to help organizations to remain viable and support return to sport efforts across B.C. The application window for the Local Sport Relief Fund is now open. Eligible organizations are encouraged to apply for this one-time grant until October 16, 2020. Well, I think we had perfect timing on our release of our coaching staff for the upcoming Canada Summer Games. Here is what just happened: Today, and together with the Canada Games Council, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the Niagara 2021 Canada Summer Games until the summer of 2022 to better protect the health and safety of Games participants, the Niagara community, and visitors from across the country.... From the moment we won the bid in March 2018, we have been working tirelessly with many volunteers to plan a phenomenal Canada Games for 5,000 participants from across Canada. Although postponed a year, we will continue to move forward with the same passion and excitement as we prepare to host the nation in 2022. We can’t wait to deliver the Games we promised and the Games you deserve.
