Dr. Gordon Neufeld, developmental psychologist, is beloved to many parents in the province who have had the privilege of hearing him speak or who have read his book, Hold on to Your Kids: Why Parents Matter. He's holding a full day seminar (cost: $90) on home learning and will be addressing many of the questions that both parents and teachers have about the decision to "teach your own". BC has been renowned for its provision of educational choice for over 30 years. Home Education (or "registered homeschooling"), as per sections 12 and 13 of the BC School Act, is one of the legal choices parents have for educating their children. You can read more about that choice by following the link below to the BC Government website. Although all students in the province must be registered (or enrolled for school-delivered programs) at a school by September 30, a parent ...can choose the registered homeschooling option at ANY point in the school year. https://www2.gov.bc.ca//classroom-alternativ/homeschooling NOTE: A student can go back to school (including DL or online) after homeschooling and enter their age-appropriate grade level. If a student goes back in grade 10, they can do all 80 credits required for their provincial graduation diploma or "Dogwood". They can also remain registered as a homeschooler and do the Adult Graduation Diploma, which requires 5 courses (20 credits), 3 of which must be completed after their 18th birthday. There are other paths to completing diploma requirements as well, including using post-secondary credits and applying them backwards for high school credit.

Thank you for your continued support of the BCHEA. The events of this spring and summer have made it very clear that the advocacy work we do around registered homeschooling is important and necessary. Via the 1-800 number, emails, Zoom, and Facebook, board members have been busy providing worried BC parents with the facts they need to make the best decisions for their families. We've also been busy contacting school districts and school staff to clarify the registration proc...ess, parent rights, and school responsibilities as per the BC School Act. If you haven't yet had a chance to renew your membership, please consider doing that right now. Your membership in the BCHEA gives us the mandate we need to interact with government and school board officials on behalf of registered homeschooling families. Membership dues are by donation (suggested amount $25, but feel free to contribute whatever amount works best for your family). Join or renew today! https://bchea.ca/about/membership/

Do kids need school? Dr. Gordon Neufeld says not. Dr. Neufeld is a developmental psychologist who has helped so many kids and families on the Lower Mainland and, through his trainings and book, throughout BC and North America. Do children really NEED to go to school to learn? or to socialize with their peers? or to develop normally? or to become fit for society? Is school the answer for every child? Is school as necessary for the child as it is to today’s society and its e...conomy? The answer is NO a resounding NO to all of the above! Before I attempt a brief explanation, let me put this belief in the indispensable role of school into some perspective.
