A collection of records that once belonged to Alexander Hamilton (1790-1839) has been certified as significant cultural property not only to Niagara but also to all of Canada. These are now in the Brock University Archives. Based out of Queenston, Alexander Hamilton's professional life took many turns. He was a postmaster, sheriff, justice of the peace, surrogate court judge, militia officer, and a businessman with ties to the fur trade. These positions placed Alexander a...t the centre of many historic events like the War of 1812, the opening of the Welland Canal, the early postal service in Canada, and the Rebellion of 1837. All of which are represented in this collection. These materials had been cared for by the Band / Woodruff family for generations. Upon the passing of Robert "Bob" Band, the family decided to return these materials to Niagara where these originated. We are very grateful. Here are a couple of links: 1) an online exhibit about Alexander Hamilton, and 2) a news story about the donation. 1) https://exhibits.library.brocku.ca/s/alexander-hamilton/ 2) https://brocku.ca/.../collection-rich-with-canadian.../ Now we wait for a creative talent to write a Broadway musical about the Canadian Alexander Hamilton.
