We made something pretty cool recently. Together with the amazing team at Avanti Software, another Calgary-based company that empowers Canadian companies to build a better workplace - we created a one-of-a-kind "superhero origin story". This story was not about crime-fighting, it was about solving problems some of us face in the workplace. From the beginning, our visions were aligned in tackling the challenge of "How do we tell a story about a software and the people who use ...it?" The team at Avanti provided us the brilliant idea of... a payroll superhero. With just the basis of the idea, we had so much fun drafting up comic styles and creating a Post-It Monster that we could all relate to. Peek into our animation process a little bit here: #animation #animatic #behindthescenes #Avanti #software

Avengers Assemble!! Some of the most memorable superheroes of our age, before our age, and will exist even after for generations, seeded from a small comics studio in the midst of World War II (1939) known as Timely Publications, and later in 1951 as Atlas Comics - then finally settled in 1961 as Marvel Comics. With characters such as Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, Wolverine, Iron Man, and a world more, Marvel Comi...cs became a marvel of its own when the Marvel Cinematic Universe launched in 2008 with the start of Iron Man. These superheroes and their superpowers were imagined, animated, illustrated and designed by a group of artists and writers with the likes of Stanley Lieber (Stan Lee), Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and others. They changed their own worlds by implanting goodness to balance the bad. But Marvel superheroes don’t just fight the wicked injustices of villains, they help people fight through tragedies of wars, economic stress, societal duress - all with hope, humour, and humanity. An outstretched hand to pull us out of our reality and into a more optimistic one. From desperate situations arose greatness. Human resilience, the fight to keep on fighting on, aren’t just qualities in superheroes - but superheroes made us realize they’re qualities in ourselves, too. Gertie is a gem of a dinosaur who lived in 1914 instead of the Mesozoic Era 66 million years ago. She came to life not from an egg, or the Jurassic Park - but from more than 10,000 individual drawings made on rice paper! Although cartoonist and animator Winsor McCay’s Gertie the Dinosaur was not the first ever animated film, it is considered as the first animated film to feature a character with an appealing personality. Gertie is playful, sweet, rebellious, and friendly. She... had a presence and a life of her own. She inspired and influenced the likes of the creators of Betty Boop (Fleischer Brothers), Felix the Cat (Otto Messmer), and Walt Disney himself. Even today, she is recognizable by artists and non-artists. Her playfulness and her character that appeared on screen remains in our hearts decades after. #gertie #dinosaur #animation #historyfriday #disney #cartoon

Georges Méliès had a career in shoemaking as a family inheritance. But he knew he ached for something different - a life entwined with magic and the arts, of beauty, colour, and illusions. In 1888, after realizing his love for stage magic, he sold his shares of the family’s shoe factory and purchased the Théâtre Robert-Houdin, creating over 30 new illusions for the stage, but they did little to improve attendance. So, he sought for something more. When the Lumière brothers pr...esented their cinematograph in 1895, Melies tried to buy one from them, only to be refused, so he purchased an animatograph instead, modifying it into a film camera. In 1896, Méliès and two others patented the Kinétographe Robert-Houdin, which Méliès endearingly referred to as a coffee grinder and machine gun for the noise it made. And from 1896 and 1913, he made more than 500 films, varying in length. What brought him international acclaim was his 1902 Le Voyage dans la Lune (A Trip to the Moon), and it soon became one of the most iconic films in cinematic history. Not long after, because of his brother’s poor financial decisions, Méliès went bankrupt; then soon, World War I began, shutting down his theatre and leaving him to flee to Paris with his two children. By 1925, he scraped together a living by working at a small candy and toy shop in Paris’s railway terminal, Gare Montparnasse. And it wasn’t until a journalist by the name of Georges-Michel Coissac tracked him down for an interview, that he began to be rediscovered and recognized by the world. Méliès would’ve been a shoemaker had it not been for his love for cinema and magic. He instead pioneered the world of movies, and created magic and beauty of his own. #animation #georgesmelies #moon #historyfriday
