Wellness Wednesday with Dr.Self I get this question a lot, especially when I recommend it in menopausal or post-menopausal women. The general rumour is that soy contains estrogen and therefore will cause breast cancer. In fact, the populations with the highest amounts of soy intake actually have the lowest incidence of breast cancer. Whaaaa?! Yep.... Soy contains phytoestrogens, which are weak plant compounds that are able to bind to estrogen receptors... but they have very weak effects. This means that it can block the effects of having a stronger estrogen, like the estradiol that we naturally make, from binding to the same receptor. So that strong estrogen has nowhere to exert its effects. Now if you have an active form of hormone-dependent cancer, you don’t want anything binding to those receptors, and that includes soy. But in terms of prevention and regulating the effects of estrogen, no, it’s not bad at all.
