Mask mandate returns for indoor public spaces, workplaces Sandra M Stanway Brooks Bulletin A steady increase in the number of COVID19 cases across Alberta has prompted restrictions.... On Friday, the province announced a new mask mandate. Effective Saturday at 8 a.m. masks are mandatory for all indoor public spaces and workplaces. Licensed establishments must end alcohol service at 10 p.m. As of Sept. 2 there were 515 hospitalizations and 118 people in ICUs across Alberta and 13,495 confirmed cases including 30 in the county and 92 active cases in Brooks. Since July 29 the number of COVID cases increased by five in the county and by 22 in the city. The province's outbreak list includes Brooks Dynamite Academy. The province is urging anyone who has not been vaccinated to limit their indoor social gatherings to two cohort families up to a maximum of 10 people. The province is also providing another incentive of $100 to all Albertans who receive a first or second COVID vaccine between now and Oct. 14. The province's new data modelling is tracking cases towards a high scenario that peaks at 1,900. "It is very likely that unless interventions are put in place, the magnitude and timing of this peak will exceed these projections given the anticipated behaviour and contact pattern changes that will occur with upcoming fall activities," the modelling states. "Overall hospitalization rates are around 10 times greater for unvaccinated compared to fully vaccinated people in the 80+ group. In younger age groups, the relative impact of vaccine increase and unvaccinated people are 30 to 120 times more likely to be admitted to hospital with COVID19 than those with vaccine protection."
