Three possible next steps in supporting children in virtual learning: 1. Encouragement! Rudolf Dreikurs stated, A child needs encouragement like a plant needs water. An encouraging statement example, I noticed you were willing to work through that difficult spot. 2. Allow time for building routines and learning new expectations. This statement is true not only for your child but also for you! Allowing yourself time to build new routines and expectations along with your ...child can be an excellent opportunity to model for them. 3. Asking for help. Often times children rarely see parents asking for help. Children can sometimes misinterpret this as feeling like they have to be perfect, or that asking for help is a sign of weakness or fault. Asking for help as a parent also models this critical life skill which your child can hopefully take with them throughout a variety of contexts. If you have any comments, questions, or reactions feel free to message us. For more content you’re welcome to follow us on Instagram @Brophy_psychology. Thanks.
Providing structure and support is a delicate balance and one that can be achieved through mutual respect. Asking questions is mutually respectful and encourages your child to exercise their problem-solving muscles, invites reflection and builds intrinsic motivation. Some examples of helpful questions are: What would you like to work on first? What would help you now? How would you like me to support you? Let’s take a closer look at these questions from a child’s perspect...ive: 1. To answer the first question, I need to look broadly at all the work I have and make a plan (time management). Then I need to prioritize (goal setting) a work flow as well as communicate that to my parent. 2. I am stuck, perhaps frustrated, and I need to stay regulated or get regulated. I then consider the resources I have at my disposal (problem solving). Those resources could be: phoning a friend, asking a parent, emailing a teacher and/or reviewing some notes. Without these questions that are asked in a tone of curiosity and kindness, a child may miss an opportunity to develop these other essential life skills along with learning their academics.
