Back in January, our Station Scientist, Stéphane Menu, had an unfortunate incident where the BPBO spotting scope was left unaccompanied for a short period of time. During that time, somehow the three legs of the tripod allowed the scope to go for a walk and despite a plea reaching 10,356 people on Facebook it has not returned. Our BPBO community sent messages of support and we received offers of unused gear to help out. We are pleased to say that we are now well-equipped for the coming season and many more in the future. Huge thanks to Vortex Canada who have donated one of their wonderful spotting scopes and a big shout-out and thank you to Tom LaForme who made a financial contribution for a new tripod and head so that the entire kit was completed! Thank you to everyone.
I hope you saw finches this winter!

Birds that normally winter in the north are on the move as noted by one of our sister observatories.
I used to participate in Project Feederwatch in days gone by but I think I'll start again this winter.
So, how does a Breeding Bird Atlas work? An atlas divides the province into 10x10 km squares that birders then survey for as many breeding species as possible. ...These data help us map species distribution across the province. Advanced birders also complete point counts in squares, which help us estimate the relative abundance of species across the province. Understanding where breeding birds occur and how their abundance changes between atlases is critical information for conserving species and habitats. See more
